- Donna M. Backes, age 74, Bowler,
died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at her residence under the care
of
- LeRoyer Hospice, Antigo. She was
born July 2, 1929 in New London, the daughter of the late Benjamin
and Clara (Niemuth) Behm. On July 6, 1948, Donna was united in
marriage to Bernard Backes in New London. He preceded her in
death on December 30, 1986.
- The couple resided in Neenah until
moving to Birnamwood where they founded Backes Food Mart.
- Donna was a member of St. Philomena
Catholic Church, Birnamwood and enjoyed traveling and her cats.
- Survivors include her children:
Christine (Roger) Breske, Wittenberg; Patricia (Michael) Jahner,
Butte
- des Morts; Michael (Alice) Backes,
Menasha; David (Pamela) Backes, Daniel (Christine) Backes, all
of Birnamwood; Timothy (Sharon) Backes and Mary (Christopher)
Willcome, all of Bowler; 22 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren;
brother and sisters-in-law: Cyril (Mary Lou) Backes, De Pere;
Mary Rohloff, Manawa; Evelyn Laughren, De Pere; Ronald (Millie)
Backes, Chula Vista, CA; and Rita Dennisson, De Pere; step brothers
and sisters: Marion Woeshnick, Lorraine Dixon, Rosalyn (Raymond)
Oberstadt, Bill (Carolyn) Rhoden, Beverly (Clifford) Mejers,
Cecilia (Peter) Dernbach, Victor (Mary) Rhoden, Ruth (Dick) Simpson,
Florence Scholl, Jerry (Beverly) Rhoden and Larry Rhoden.
- In addition to her husband and parents,
she was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Marie; a
- brother, Benjamin; and a sister,
Elveria Bartel.
- The funeral Mass will be celebrated
at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at St. Philomena Catholic Church,
- Birnamwood. The Rev. Everard Scesney
O.F.M. and the Rev. Robert Karuhn will concelebrate the mass.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from
3 p.m. until the time of services at the church. Schmidt-Schulta
Funeral Home, Birnamwood is assisting the family with funeral
arrangements.
