State Highway Death Toll Reaches 150
By United Press International
Nebraska's 1958 highway death toll jumped early today with the death of a Colorado man in a car-truck
crash in Grand Island. Another traffic death occurred Thursday night near Wood River.
Killed in the car-truck accident this morning was Harry Fry, Brighton, Colo., driver of a semi-trailer truck
that was in [a] collision with a car driven by Hall County Treasurer Oscar Niemoth, Grand Island. Fry's relief driver, Cecil Dewey, 40, Brighton, escaped with bruises. Dewey was asleep in the cab of the truck at the time of the impact.
The accident occurred at 2nd and Jefferson Sts. in Grand Island. Second St. is is Highway 30.
Investigators said the eastbound car apparently veered over and struck the left front wheel of the tractor
of the westbound truck. The truck jackknifed and rolled over on its side, sliding 138 feet and hitting a tree. Fry's hand was pinned between the top of the windshield and the tree. He died before he could be freed from the wreckage.
The extent of Niemoth's injuries were not immediately determined.
The victim of the Thursday night crash near Wood River was Dennis Ray Mohlman, five-month old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Mohlman, Wood River.
That accident occurred one-half mile east and two miles south of Wood River at a county road
intersection.
The Mohlman car was in [a] collision with one driven by Rev. Conley Hinrichs, 33, Wood River.
Mohlman, 34, suffered shock and undetermined injuries, and his wife, Jo Ann, 24, who was holding
Dennis, was hospitalized with a broken hip and shock. Another Mohlman child, Linda Sue, 4, suffered a broken shoulder and shock.
Hinrichs suffered a broken pelvis.
The Mohlman car according to investigators, landed in a water-filled ditch on the southwest corner of the
intersection. The Hinrich car landed on top of the Mohlman car.
On this date a year ago, Nebraska had recorded 130 traffic deaths.
