Family -- The Hanneman-Niemuth Mill
- HANNEMAN & NIEMUTH SAWMILL
TOWNSHIP OF SUMMIT
LANGLADE
GLEASON,WISCONSIN
1933
WRITTEN BY HENRY S. SIMON
-
- LOUIE HANNEMAN
- This is just a little story
About the mill that Louie owns
Louie is the boss you know
When he can't come out he phones
Louie lives in Antigo
Town folks have known him long
And when he comes out to the mill
Something's sure to go wrong
-
- WALT NIEMUTH
- Walt Niemuth is the foreman
He does the filing too
He fixes up the belts and stuff
And then he takes a chew
-
- HANK NIEMUTH
- And then there is the greasy
man
The boys all call him Hank
He fixes his engine night and day
He also fills the water tank
-
- LYLE BYERS -- JULIUS GERDES
- Lel Byers is the head sawyer
Doc Gerdes is the setter
They both can handle their own jobs
You couldn't find men better
-
- CARL PREUSER -- NORM BERGMAN
- Carl is the edger man
Shorty turns the cants
Shorty wears an old straw hat
And Carl wears army pants
-
- ELMER LEMKE
- Lemke is the scaler
With a pencil he's a whiz
He scales the logs and lumber
Folks say he knows his biz
-
- VERNON STEGER -- HANK SIMON
- The slasher's run by Vernon
The trimmer's run by me
We work together all the time
It makes things hum, you see
-
- JOE HUNT
- The mill yard's cluttered
up with drays
And ties and three by fours
Joe Hunt hauls them to their place
With Dan, his big bay horse
-
- FERDNAND KLUBALL
- Ferdy drives the new V-8
To Elcho and Rhinelander
It's loads of lumber that he hauls
He's always sure to land'er
-
- GREGG HUNT
- From the woods comes a (word
missing)
That's neither car nor tractor
It's a Model T that's all fixed up
So Gregg can haul logs faster
-
- ED MILLER
- The oldest gent that's on
the job
Has every thing to do
He cleans the bunkhouse, hauls the wood
And carries water too
He piles up lumber, helping Ferd load-up
And does most everything
WE call him OLD ED MILLER
We play lots of tricks on him
-
- GROVER FURLOTT, LEN SCHWANN,
BILL DEMSIE, LASALLE MATHENY
- The logs are sawed by Furlott's
gang
There's LEN, LASALLE, and BILL
They saw from daylight until dark
And many trees they kill
-
- FRANK STEINFEST -- GENE
STEINFEST
- Frank Steinfest skids the
logs with "Kicker" cub
Gene drives a team of blacks
In the morning they walk to the woods
At night they ride the horses back
-
- At evening when the whistle
blows
It's a noisy rushing place
We will run for the bunkhouse
To wash our dirty face
-
- DAISY NEIMUTH -- AUDREY
STEIGER
- And when we are all washed
up
And the cookie HOLLERS grub!
It's every body for himself
We sure do stow in grub
The cooks name is Daisy
We sure do like her pie
Audrey Steiger is the cookie's name
And she can make the dishes fly
-
- And now my story is ended
You heard everybody's name
From boss and foreman, to the cook
Whose pies have won her fame!
-
- P.S. We started out working 10 hours
a day at $1 a day (10 cents and hour) -- N.B.
