SCATTERSHOTS

From The Prez

I think we had a really good meeting in January with Walter's program. Read about it two articles down the page.

Several of us attended the Fly Tying Festival in Houston on January 15th. Some of our own PWFF members who participated in the tying included Bill Heugel, Walter McLendon, Michael Verduin, Slim Mitchell, John Scarbrough, and a new member, Tom O Miessler, who is also a member of the Montgomery County Flyrodders and lives in Spring, Texas. Royce and I had a good visit with Tom and enjoyed watching him tie. He has promised us an occasional article for the newsletter. Welcome, Tom.

We also met several others who expressed interest in our club if only for the newsletter. I take that as a complement to our club newsletter. I would also take this opportunity to invite club members to submit articles; especially reports on fishing trips, locations, results, etc. Send the articles to our editor, Royce Feaster, or to me.

The location for the Open House is reserved for April 15th. It will again be at the Chamber of Commerce Building. We will publish time, plans, programs, etc. as soon as we get them set. I urge you to mark your calender and plan to attend; and invite people you come in contact with to attend.

My long time fishing buddy, Royce Feaster, has retired. Congratulations Royce!

Hopefully we will be able to fish more and we would welcome you to fish with us if you so desire. Being able to fish during the week allows you to avoid the crowds on Saturday.

I try not to cover items in my article that I feel will be covered in depth by others, so I will just touch on the calender. I think Jimmy Lee has led in composing a good list of outings, and I hope each of you will participate as much as possible. We can have a lot of fun together, and I look forward to it. We will comment on coming outings at each meeting.

We voted to have the July meeting on July 8th at the Houston County Lake outing instead of the regular meeting night since the first Tuesday is July 4th.

I want to welcome new members Bob Bornhofen, Steve Watson, and George Reed & son Gabe. Also, I mentioned Tom Miessler earlier. I know each of you will offer much to the club and we will enjoy having you as fellow club members.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the February meeting, and as always...

FLYLINES

From The V-Prez

I am not too sure of this position of V-Prez and newsletter editor. By the time I get through editing everyone's articles, I find that I don't have much left to write about because everything has been covered. So, I guess I can get personal, but no one wants to read about my family, my dogs, my...

OK, Baker mentioned that I have now retired. Fishing trips should be easier to plan.

Wellll..., we will see. Ken and I are going to go to Purtis Creek the second week of February. I don't know how the weather will be, but if any of you want to meet us there and make a real good three or four days of fishing fun, come on. Last time we were there, the water was about 6 feet low, and the 2 and 3 pound bass were getting in the way of our catching any really big bass. Want to come with us and find out how it is? Walter said that there should still be some of the stocked trout below the dam in the holding ponds, so we can try our hand at that also.

I know that several of you have been on fishing trips lately. Have you got slides to make into a show about the particular lake you fished? Do you need help in producing a program from the information? Remember, all of us want to share in your adventure.

I saw Ronny J. out at Lowes last Saturday. I don't know if he was purchasing that new axe for his own use, or as a present for his wife. I didn't ask. I did check on the rod building he is doing. He has five rods in the process, and at least one more that Jared S. is wanting to build. If you are serious about getting Ronny to help you build a rod, you definitely need to get in line real soon. The club rod we are going to do for the Open House is another rod to add to that number. Ronny sure knows how to stay busy.

I am looking forward to seeing y'all at the February meeting.

Report On January Program

B. Heugel

Walter McLendon put on a great program, Fly Fishing East Texas, at the last meeting. The program was essentially the same one he did for the Texas Fly Fishers. He had information on 30 lakes. The information included access to the lakes as well as areas in the lakes for best fishing. Stocking schedules were also listed. The lakes included Kurth Lake, Ratcliff lake, Houston County , Lake Nacogdoches, Lake Pinkston, Steinhagen, Tyler State Park, Sam Rayburn, Lake Murval, Purtis Creek, Madison Lake, Boudin Lake, Boykin Springs, Village Creek, White Rock creek, the Trinity river near the lock and dam, and Toledo Bend. Walter has the details in a book which is available to all. This is a wonderful collection of information which rivals some of the information of fly fishing opportunities that have been published for other areas of the state. Well Done Walter.

Doug Douglas won the flies and Larry Copenhaver got the door prize.

We had some new members join the club at the last meeting. Steve Watson, George Reed and Bob Bornhofen. Steve lives in Jacksonville and has some experience at fly fishing. He has been tying flies for about 2 years. George and his wife Denise live in Lufkin. He is interested in learning to tie flies. Bob lives in Trinity and is a beginner fly tier. All of them are interested in our outings and fishing trips. Make sure you say Hi to them at the next meeting and give them a call when you go fishing.

We reviewed the club calendar at the last meeting and made some changes. Be sure to make a note of the changes on your calendar.

Walter McLendon gave the trout stocking schedule for Tyler State Park. Jan 21, Feb 8 and Feb 12 for Rusk.

We talked some about the printer problems we have been having. Jay has been providing printing services for us and his machine is getting ready for retirement. Part of the discussion again covered the use of our website for access to the newsletter as well as sending it e-mail. Royce said he would work on updating our approach.

We discussed the open house and in particular decided to again build a rod to be auctioned off.

Walter reported on a poor fishing trip to Rockport and Jay reported on a trip he made to Beavers Bend. On that trip one of our ex-members caught a 24 inch Rainbow from the 40 ft Hole.

Our Bass Hair Bug classes have started. We have a good size group and have been having a lot of fun. The meeting place at St. Cyprians is great. Thanks Hugh! Just the right size for our activity. The first session was marred somewhat by the late delivery of materials. They came to my house 2 hours after I left for Lufkin. However we had enough pieces and such that we were able to share and got into the first phases of spinning.

Outings & Fishing

by Jimmy Lee

It is the dead of winter and we should be getting rain every few days, but we have received very little. If this continues then we will go into the spring and summer under drought conditions, which will effect fishing and where we fish. One area that is producing good back bass is Lake Nacogdoches. I have no report of anyone catching bass with the fly, but this will change in the next few weeks as bass begin to move into pre spawn areas. I know many of you fish Nacogdoches by putting in at the East or West boat ramps on the south end of the lake. If you have a small water craft launching at these two ramps limits your fishing area. On the North/West side of the lake is a small ramp that can be used to launch into the area known as "Yellow Bank".

This ramp is a very small private ramp, but gives you access to good fishing areas without traveling across the bigger water. There is a small launch fee, $3.00 for trailed boats and $2.00 if your craft is not trailed. There is also a small camp ground here, but you may want to check this out before deciding to camp there. From this launch you have access to some very good fishing areas. With care you can fish the West Bank to the far north end of the lake. In the back waters of "Yellow Bank" you can wade, but use care. In the late spring and early summer blue gill fishing is very good here.

Directions for getting to this area:

From Hwy 59 go north on Loop 224 to Hwy 21 west, go west on Hwy.21 for 8.9 miles, turn left on county road 759, there is a sign on the left that reads J & S Campground. Follow this road for 2 miles, it dead ends into the campground. There is a pay station as you enter the camp ground. If you like to fish Lake Nacogdoches from a small craft this is a great place to start.

Good Fishing!!

Nice Club Donation

by W. McLendon

Richard Hart, owner of Brazos FlyFishers in Granbury, Texas donated to our club, $50 worth of materials of our selection at the Texas Fly Tying Festival in Houston. Richard has decided to scale his business back to a wholesaler rather than follow every fly fishing show each year. He obviously spent a lot of time and effort in these shows, for his booth was always the largest participating. I did not ask, but assume, that Richard will continue selling through his catalog. You can call him at 1-800-200-0364 presently, E-mail him at brazosff@flash.net, or visit his website at www.flash.net/~rhart.

I am sure we will continue to see Richard's smiling face, either tying flies or presenting programs and classes in some of the shows we attend. He is a great fly tyer and has several popular patterns attributed to his name, like Hart Ghost Minnow and Hart's Southern Crawfish.

Royce will be sending Richard a copy of this newsletter and I hope we all will get an opportunity to thank him for his generosity.

She is completing her Masters in May and who needs two Masters degrees? Since both have attended SFA, they have had little time for fly fishing or being active in our club. We enjoyed them at some outings and will miss them in the future. Maybe we can get an invite to MO someday. We wish them well!

Door Prize & Fly Drawings

K. Baker

Information for the new members:

At each meeting we can either bring a fly, or donate a dollar to qualify each participant for two drawings. The first is for the donated flies, and the second is for a door prize. Some of the door prize items are tying supplies and some are fishing supplies. The donated money is used to supplement our door prizes. At the Fly Tying Festival in Houston, we were presented some items by Brazosports, who are going out of business. Linda McLendon was asked to pick out some items for our club, and they will be available for the drawing at the February meeting.

The club holds these prizes to about a $10 value. If you have any items you would like to see in the grab bag for the door prizes in the future, please tell Bill, Royce, or myself and we will see how quickly we can add them to the selection. Tie your fly or save your dollar and come join the fun.
