My Italian ancestors arrived in New York City in the years 1894-1895.

Francessco "Frank" Anselmini arrived by himself in April 1894 aboard the ship "Werra". He left Northern Italy from the Lombardia Region and the area of Cremona. He departed from the port of Ligurgia, Genova. He traveled with 1 suitcase and was a mason by trade.

His wife, Rosa, arrived the following year with 3 children, Ludwig, Reinwald and Catherine.

In 1897, Rosa gives birth to what we believe was twins, Realdo and Luigi. It is believed that Realdo died, possibly born dead.

Frank, Rose and the children all made their home in New York City and first appear living at an apartment located on 61st Street. Rose has also given birth to another child, a son, Giuseppi, who is my grandfather,Joseph Francis.

Rose give birth also in 1902 to Tomasso (Thomas) and to William in 1904. Rose also gave birth to another child after 1900 and prior to 1910 which apparently died. It was indicated in the census records that Rosa gave birth to 9 children in total.

1917 shows my grandfather, Joseph Francis, enlisting in the army and serving in France.

In 1910 the family has moved and are located on East 65th Street in New York City. Son, Reinwald is not shown with the family at this time. He would be about 20 years of age. I have been unable to locate any information on him in the records. It is believed that he may have died prior to 1910. My mother who knew all the family said she never heard of him, but he is clearly shown with the family in the 1900 records and listed as the 2nd oldest son.

1920 shows the family living at 1094 2nd Ave, which is about 56th - 57th Street. They have been at this location since 1915. Ludwig "Luddie" and sister Catherine or "Katie" as she was known, have both married. Ludwig married Rose Larghi from New Jersey and they moved downtown to 1235 Ave A in the East Village. In 1920 Ludwig and Rose are shown with 2 childrn, Beatrice and Ludwig Jr.

The census indicated that "Katie" married Edward McCoy. They are shown in their own apartment, but in the same building as her parents in 1920 at 1094 2nd Avenue. Katie gives birth in 1921 to daughter, Anna and again in 1929 to daughter, Eileen. Her husband, Edward, dies sometime late in 1929.

Ludwig and Rose and their 4 children are living on 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, Queens. Rose had given birth to 2 more children prior to the move to Queens. She had son Andrew in 1922 and daughter, Alice in 1928. Ludwig owns his own business and his home.

Records indicate that my grandfather, Joseph was a policeman in NYC and he married, Helen Margaret Hoar in 1924. Helen gave birth to son Joseph in 1925, daughter Gloria in 1926 and Edward (who was named for his uncle Edward McCoy who just died).

1930 shows that the entire family have all moved into Queens with Frank, Rosa, Thomas and Louis living on 39th Avenue in Astoria.

William has married to Mary and they live on 64th Street in Queens. His sister, a recent widow with her 2 daughters are living with him at this time.

My grandparents, Joseph and Helen and their 3 children are living on 24th Street in Astoria, Queens. In 1934, Helen gives birth to another son, Robert Christopher.
