Patrick Lysaighth Gallery was the son of Patrick Gallery and Anne Lysaighth. They lived in the County of Clare, Ennistyman Parish.
Patrick L. had one sister, Ellen and one brother, James (10 Sep 1827IR-1901IA) James never married.
Little is known of Patrick L's father Patrick. The story told to Jim Gallery (the family historian) was that after Patrick L's mother Anne passed away, his father,Patrick, married a servant girl. The elder Patrick and his new wife had several more children. Some of them also came to America and settled in the Chicago area. Among the descendants of the Chicago Gallery clan there is Admiral Daniel Vincent Gallery, Admiral William Gallery, Father John Gallery and Admiral Phil Gallery.
Also, little is known about Patrick L.'s mother, Anne Lysaighth and her family. Some say her father's given name was Timothy and some say it was James and some say it was Patrick.
Patrick L. was 27 years old when he came to America in 1852, and his brother James was 2 1/2 years younger. They lived in Brooklyn, NY for two years, and then moved to Massachusetts where Patrick L. worked in a quarry and farmed.
When he was 30 years old, Patrick L. married Johanna McGrath (New Years Day 1857). Johanna was born 6 May 1828 in New Castle Parish, in the County of Tipperary. Johanna was the daughter of Michael McGrath (pronounced "McGraw") and Alice Burke. Johanna's family reportedly lived about ten miles from Tunkenora, so Patrick and Johanna may have known each other in Ireland. Johanna and Patrick had five children.
In the spring of 1868 Patrick's brother James travelled to Iowa. He purchased two farms in Fremont township in Buchanan County - the one by the High Bridge for himself, and one a little east of there on what is now highway #20 for his brother Patrick L. He sent word back to Springfield to his brother Patrick and family to join him.
According to Florence Hogan, grandaughter of Patrick L., as told to Jim Gallery, when Pactick L. and family arrived he liked the farm by the High Bridge better than the one that James had purchased for him, and some kind of swap was made. Thus Patrick ended up with the High Bridge farm, and James with the farm on Highway #20.
