16th July 1940 - At 1223,
the Scottish Minstrel on voyage New York to London, with fuel oil, in Convoy
HX-55, was hit by one torpedo from U-61 about 130 miles NW of Bloody Foreland
in the North Atlantic, about 170 miles W. of
the island of Colonsay on the west coast of Scotland. The vessel remained
afloat for many hours but it proved impossible to save her and she sank on the
17th. Nine crewmembers were lost. Capt. P. Dunn was among the 31 survivors, who were later picked up by HMS GARDENIA and landed at Folkestone.
