Aunt Emma McKinney
was my Grandmother's sister. Emma Rosetta Davis was
born June 15, 1884 in Southwestern Bandera County, near
Vanderpool, Texas probably on the Thompson Ranch. Emma married James Newton Petty in 1905 by W. J. O'Brien, JP of prec. #4, Bandera Co., TX. Filed 1-31-1905 by Sam O'Bryant, Co. Clerk. James died about 1917 leaving Emma with a 10 year old son. James Petty is buried in Vanderpool Cemetery north of Utopia, Texas with several other Pettys. Emma died May 25, 1964 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas at the home of her son. Emma was daughter of L. J. (Cug) and Mary Alice (Allie) Miller Davis. |

| Emma is buried at
Hillcrest Cemetery in Uvalde with her second husband: John
Franklin McKinney born September 26, 1891 in Live Oak County
Texas. Frank died July 15, 1960 in Uvalde County Texas. Frank and
Emma had no children. Frank always worked on a ranch mostly with sheep and goats. In the late 1920s, he worked near Del Rio. Later he went to work on the Dunbar Ranch north of Bracketteville in Kinney County Texas. Frank was a hard worker, kind and I never heard him say a cuss word. Mr. Dunbar was a nice man to work for and he furnished Frank and Emma with a good house. Emma took care of several milk cows and a bunch of chickens. She sold eggs and butter on Saturdays in Uvalde. Emma cooked on a large wood stove. Supper time, everyone went out to wash up. Just out the kitchen door, there was a leanto attached to the house. It was covered with grape vines. There was a bench and wash pan. Frank and Emma lived without electricity and running water for many years. Hunters came every fall and liked Frank so much, they had gas lights installed in the old ranch house. Emma had a radio that was powered by a battery connected to a wind charger. A windcharger was a little windmill thing attached to the edge of the roof just outside the window where the radio sat. They used the radio sparingly to save battery power. Frank stayed on the Dunbar until he retired. He and Emma bought a little house in Campwood. They lived there for several years. Uncle Frank had been married before. I found a marriage record in Bandera County TX: John Franklin McKinney to Hallie May O'Bryant 4-16-1911. (I will email, if someone would like a copy.) We knew Frank had a son and I found birth record in Bandera County for: Crockett M. McKinney born 9-4-1914 to Frank McKinney and Hallie Humphreys. Frank's obit states his son as: Cecil C.McKinney of Leveland Texas. Now... we wonder... was Hallie married before Frank? Hallie May O'Bryant or Hallie Humphreys? Were there 2 sons?
