BirthWilliam was born in 1834 at Rhode Island, USA. William had stated on Agreements which he signed for whalers operating out of Hobart that his birthplace was Rhode Island, America. His record of death states his reputed birthplace as being USA and that his period of residence in Hobart until his death was 58 years (however he must have been a resident for at least 68 years to have married Eliza in 1862). There are two possibilities for William's birth on the IGI:
BurialWilliam was buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery in the Independent Public section. His burial was registered on 31 October 1914. He was aged 79 years. William was interred on Saturday afternoon, 31 October 1914. His last known residence was 329 Liverpool St, Hobart. Funeral directors were Pierce J Keating. There is no headstone. His burial order from Pierce J Keating, Hobart (now Graham Funerals) reads: Harris Mrs Eliza 329 Liverpool St
DeathCopy of death certificate.
DescriptionWilliam Henry was partly literate – in some instances he signed his name, in others not. For example, he gave his mark (x) when he signed on to Catherine on 12 August 1861, but in 1881 he put his signature on his son Alfred Frederick's birth certificate. Perhaps he learnt to write in between times. William was an American. According to family oral history from Pamela Jean DAVIS he used to wave an American flag at the Hobart docks every time an American ship came into port. ImmigrationWilliam Henry HARRIS emigrated from the United States of America in 1856, most likely as a sailor at the age of 22 years. MarriageWilliam Henry HARRIS married Eliza SHERBURD at the Presbyterian Church (Chalmers Free Church) in Hobart on 11 September 1862. At the time of their marriage, William was Second Mate on the whaler of which Eliza’s father John SHERBURD was Master. Witnesses to the marriage were Henry GARTH and Anne GARTH. OccupationsWilliam worked variously as a painter, whaler, carpenter and farmer. From 1860 to 1872 William served on whalers as a seaman and officer. During the period 1860 to 1872, William had one voyage as third mate, one voyage as boat steerer, one voyage as shipskeeper and one voyage as seaman (Chamberlain, 1988). He signed off the Prince Regent on 3 January 1860 and signed on another ship (name unknown) on 4 January 1860. Another ship he served on was Catherine. It is not known when he joined the ship, but he left it on 12 August 1861. He resigned from Catherine for another voyage on Catherine on the same day as Shipskeeper. The master of Catherine was John SHERBURD, William's father-in-law. Between 1872 and 1875 William was a farmer in the Kingston district, where three of his sons were born. From circa 1875 until at least 1897 William worked as a carpenter. PropertyWilliam was granted 640 acres of land with water frontage at Blackmans Bay south of Hobart. This land includes the site where Blackmans Bay Primary School now stands. MCGAUGHRAN held the land to the south, from half way down the bay. |
