Birth

Henrietta HARRIS was born to William Henry HARRIS and Eliza SHERBURD on 18 February 1875 in Hobart.  Her birth was registered on 13 March 1875.  The informant was William H HARRIS, her father, of Davey St, Hobart.

Henrietta was listed in the family bible (which I have on file) as Henry Hetta HARRIS, with birth date as 11 February 1876.  The date of birth on her birth certificate is 18 February 1875.

Henrietta also signed her name as Henry Hetta HARRIS on her marriage certificate.

Death

Henrietta died on 17 June 1956 aged 80 or 81 years.  Her death notice in The Mercury on 18 June 1856 read:

QUAYLE – On June 17, 1956, at her daughter’s residence (Mrs T. J. Eaves, 53 Davey St, Hobart), Henrietta, dearly beloved wife of the late James Quayle, and loving mother of Jack (Sydney), Billie (Hobart), Jean (Sydney), Mae (deceased), Vance (Campbell Town), Jim (Bellerive), and Noel (Hobart), in her 81st year.

Marriage

James Harold QUAYLE married Henrietta HARRIS in the Church of St John the Baptist, Hobart on 27 March 1897 by license and according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England.

James was 23 years of age and a bachelor.  Henrietta was 20 years of age and a spinster.  Witnesses were T C WILLIAMS, Lizzie QUAYLE (James' sister) and Nellie QUAYLE (James' sister).  Married by R. FINNIS.

Marriage Certificate

It is most probable that Henrietta was pregnant when she married as James William was born under 6 months after the marriage.

I hold a copy of the original marriage certificate – it was found by Vance Doreen QUAYLE in the lining of a large horsehair trunk believed to have been used when the QUAYLE family immigrated to Australia.

A Tasmanian newspaper (copy held on file) ran the following article on James and Henrietta's 50th wedding anniversary in March 1947.

Golden Wedding Anniversary
Mr and Mrs J. Quayle, of Campbell Town, celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding by holding an enjoyable evening at their home on Wednesday.  Members of their family and friends were present, and games and cards were played.  A two-tier diamond-shaped cake was made by Mrs W. Lee.
Congratulatory messages were read from members of the family who were unable to be present.
