Birth

Eliza was the eldest surviving daughter of John SHERBURD and Mary BLACKLOW.  She was born on 6 June 1841 at Hobart.  Her birth was registered on 6 September 1841.  The informant was her mother.

Burial

Eliza was buried 13 June 1940 at Moorina Cemetery.  The funeral was held at Winnaleah.  Her tombstone reads:

Eliza Harris
Died 12 June 1940
Aged 99 Years

Death

Eliza died on 12 June 1940 at Winnaleah.  Her death notice in The Mercury of 13 Jun 1940 read:

HARRIS – At the residence of her daughter, Mrs J Quale, Winnaleah, on June 12, 1940, Eliza, in her 100^th year.

Eliza left a family of four sons and one daughter, Henrietta (Mrs J Quayle), Edward (Bellerive), George (Hobart), Harry (Strahan) and Frederick (Adelaide).  

Eliza lived with her daughter for the past 9 years and was in good health.  Her husband, William, had died 24 years ago.  She spent a good deal of her life on a whaler of which her father was captain.

Marriage

William Henry HARRIS married Eliza SHERBURD at the Presbyterian Church (Chalmers Free Church) in Hobart on 11 September 1862. 

At the time of their marriage, William was Second Mate on the whaler of which Eliza’s father John SHERBURD was Master.  

Witnesses to the marriage were Henry GARTH and Anne GARTH.
