TOP
On 13 July 1858, Maria was witness to the
marriage of Johnathan BESWICK and Charlotte BRYANT (aged 22) at Port Sorell.
It is likely that Maria and Charlotte were friends as well as first cousins.
Charlotte's mother, Elizabeth JESSOP was Maria's sister.

Maria died on 8 September 1933 aged 98
years. Her obituary notice in the
Weekly
Courier of Thursday, 14 Sep 1933, p54 read:
Well-Known
Citizens Pass
Mrs Maria S Stevenson
The funeral took place at St Peter’s churchyard, St Leonards, on Monday, of
Mrs Maria S Stevenson, who died at her residence, “Millwood Plains”, White
Hills, on Friday, at the age of 98 years. The
deceased was a daughter of Mr John Mawer, and was born at Launceston.
Her sister, Mrs Henrietta Kaye, of Canning-street, who was in her 100th
year, died about six weeks ago. The
late Mrs Stevenson, with her sister, spent her early life at Wesley Vale, where
her father was one of the first settlers, having a fine tract of country
subsequently known as “Moorlands”. Educated
at Launceston, the deceased married Mr James Stevenson, a settler at White
Hills, and he died over half a century ago.
She, however, carried on the farm, with the assistance in late years of
her adopted son, Mr F Bishop, and attended regularly the weekly produce sales at
Launceston. She led a particularly active life. Only a week prior to her death she was in the city, but then
complained of not feeling well. The
deceased leaves a family of four sons and four daughters – Messrs Thomas
(Forth), James (Scottsdale), Henry (White Hills), and John (Devonport), and the
daughters are Mrs John Trethewie (White Hills), Mrs Mann (Evandale), Mrs S
Nichols (matron of the Convalescent Home at St Leonards), and Miss Florence
Stevenson.

James
STEVENSON married Maria Sophia MAWER in Launceston on 5 January 1859.
They were married at the Church of St Paul at White Hills by T BROWNRIGG
according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England by License.
Witnesses
to the marriage were John MAWER (the bride's father) and Henrietta KAYE
(the bride’s sister). James and Maria were both of 'full age'.
James was a farmer, Maria was a spinster.
They applied for a licence for their
marriage with the surrogate as BROWNRIGG. James was a bachelor of Millwood
Plains. Maria was a spinster of the Upper Nile.
The marriage notice
in The Mercury of 18 Jan 1859 read:
January
5 – By special license, at the White Hills, by the Rev. F. Brownrigg, Mr James
Stevenson, of Millwood, to Maria Sophia, the youngest daughter of John Moore,
Esq., Moorlands, Torquay, River Mersey.

Maria inherited property from her father through his will.
She received half of the Thistle St property in Launceston (with her sister
Henrietta) and one third of the Moorlands property at Port Sorell.
However, the Moorlands property was not conveyed to her until after the
death of her mother. Her father's
will has more information.
