AbodesAfter her husband died, Maris continued to live on the Moorlands property, even though it was now divided into three lots. By 1875 it has been divided into three narrow blocks of equal size, the western one owned by Sam Moore [sic], the middle one by his sister Mrs Stevenson and the third by his elder sister Mrs Kaye. On this last block lived their mother, Maria (Thomas, 1975, p.95) BurialMaria was buried at the homestead, Moorlands, Port Sorell beside her husband at the north of the house garden. According to Thomas (1975, p.96): In or about 1878 Maria was laid to rest beside her husband in the Moorlands garden. Though there was by then a church graveyard at Wesley Vale, the choice of her burial place is understandable ... DeathMaria died on 16 September 1878 at Port Sorell (Moorlands) aged 61 years of dropsy. The informant was Samuel MAWER, her son of Moorlands. Her death registered the same day. MarriageJust over a year after gaining his Ticket of Leave, on 18 February 1833, John Arnold MAWER married Maria Lee JESSOP at St John’s Church, Launceston. Both of them were listed as being free. They were married by banns by Reverend W H BROWNE.
Witnesses to the marriage were W BOULTON of Launceston and William JONES
of Launceston. OccupationsAt the age of 8 years, Maria is recorded as being in the service of Dr SMITH of Norfolk Plains (Longford). ReligionMaria and John were signatories to a petition for a Church of England at Breadalbane on 28 December 1840. They were living at Talisker at the time, within 1½ miles of the proposed church. Maria made her mark x. Their daughter Henrietta was also a signatory to the petition, under the age of 14 years. (CSO 5/194) |
