AbodesWhilst living at Tunbridge, (William) Thomas PRESNELL's house was burgled on 17 March 1866. Items stolen were 1 pair dark brown cloth trousers (a rend in left leg below knee), 1 new white shirt, 1 black neckerchief, 2 pairs cotton socks, and 16 shillings in silver. The trousers were identifiable. [POL 709/1 23 March 1866 p46] BurialWilliam Thomas was buried on 19 June 1887 at Oatlands Uniting Church cemetery. The tombstone inscription reads: In William Thomas is buried in the same grave as his wife and son, Robert. DeathWilliam Thomas died on 18 June 1887 in the district of Oatlands of pneumonia aged 58 years. His death was registered on 20 June 1887. The informant was John THOMAS, undertaker of Oatlands. William Thomas' date of death is listed as 19 June 1887 on death certificate, but 18 June 1887 on tombstone and in The Mercury. His death notice in The Mercury of 2 Jul 1887 read: PRESNELL – On June 18, at his residence, Mount Seymour, after a short but painful illness, Thomas Presnell, aged 58 years, leaving a wife and large family to mourn their loss. Melbourne papers please copy. MarriageWilliam Thomas PRESNELL married Emily HILL on 16 September 1856 at Campbell Town. William was of 'full age', a bachelor and a labourer. Emily was aged 18 and a spinster. They were married at St Lukes Church, Campbell Town by William BRICKWOOD according to the rites and ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland by Banns. Witnesses to the marriage were Peter HILL [Emily’s father] and Harriett GREEN [William Thomas' sister]. William Thomas made his mark (x) on his marriage certificate. OccupationsPossibly worked for Edwin PRESNELL, his cousin. Also listed as a farmer. William Thomas was working as a labourer at the time of the baptism of his children Emily (1858), Thomas (1859), Caroline (1861), Rose (1867), Arthur (1870). But listed as a farmer at the time of the baptism of his children Esther (1865). |
