His death notice in The Mercury on 22 April 1950 read: COWLEY – On April 21, 1950 at a private hospital, Launceston, Arthur Archibald, dearly beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth Cowley, of White Hills, and loved father of Ray, John, Allan, Max, Clem, Bert and Lance, in his 84th year. Arthur died aged 83 years according to his headstone. Marriage 1Arthur Archibald COWLEY married his first wife, Emily Mary GEE on 7 May 1890 at the residence of Rev William Law, Canning Street, Launceston. They were married according to the rites and ceremonies of congregationalists by virtue of Act 23 Vic. No.11. Witnesses were Lilla Elizabeth CHUGG and Edward Thomas GEE. Arthur was a bachelor aged 23 years. Emily was a spinster aged 22 years. Marriage 2Arthur Archibald COWLEY married his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellen CHUGG, on 2 July 1901 at the residence of Mr John CHUGG (father of the bride) of "Corra Linn", White Hills, TAS. Witnesses to the wedding were W (G?) J CHUGG and Ada M CHUGG (bride's sister), both of “Corra Linn”, White Hills. They were married by licence according to the usages of the Church of England by the vicar of South Dorset, L S M ROCKEL (?). Arthur was aged 34 years, a farmer and a widower. Mary was aged 25, a spinster. PropertiesArthur Archibald COWLEY bought land for a farm at White Hills which incorporated the triangle of land between Cowley Rd, Blessington Rd and Evandale Rd at White Hills. The farm house, now derelict, is still visible at the corner of Blessington Rd and Evandale Rd. Apparently, Arthur Archibald purchased the land with money he earnt at the Kalgoorlie gold fields in the late 1890s. |
