Dear Wife
I take great pleasure to acknowledge the Receipt
of two letters from you I was very glad to learn that you
was all well my health is verry good at present you
will be Surprised to learn that we are again in Nashville
we landed here last night & are going into camp to day
in a beautiful grove of Timber it is thought we will Stay
here for 3 or four weeks and perhaps will be paid off while
here Report Say we are going to Texas another Report is
that we are going to little Rock Arcansas & Still a third
Report Say we are going home The war is over etc etc
But oh wont I be happy to See that day I would give
almos any Price to See you & the children yess & all my old associates
at home & I am anxious to See the old farm I am a little
astonished to learn that there is Some excitement at home
about coal oil I hope they may find Such a thing in our Co
altho I would not lease my farm for that purpose I have
no faith in them finding Such good fortune as that you Say your
wheat looks So nice & the meadows So green oh how I wish I could See things
generally at home But I must be contented for the present, wont be
long at the verry farthest til I will have Served out my time
& then I can Say I have a home of My own & Something to go on
you ask how I am going to Send my money home I cannot Say
how always find Some way to Send money I will bring it
on the 29th of August if not Sooner you wish to know whether A.J.
Nichols has got back to the Co yet he has not but I learn that
he is on the road home know & will be up in a few weeks
Jack Cole come up to the co to day after being a prisoner
for 15 Months he looks very harty Thos L Cole is know
Commissioned as Ajutant of our Regt McCormick is acting
Ordnance & Assistan Commissary Sergt & is just as happy
a man as lives I believe Lieut Carney is with the co
& we are having a very nice time all the work I have to do
I think Just Play I do not go on Picket More than once in
a week & that does not give Me half the exersize I Should
have. well Dear Wife you will have to excep just Such a
wandering letter as I can rite you I feel like I was almost
at home but yet I can come no farther just know I am
almost 400 hundre miles Nearer home than what I was four
days ago. you Speak of the prospect of Peace & of the death
of our Beloved President Abraham Lincoln  -------------
I cannot express my feelings on the Subject I hope the vilan
will meet his Reward, But then why Should we grieve I believe
the Almighty thought his work was done & well done come
up higher though good & faithful Servant & I will give the
Rest. Andy Johnston will finish the work of Punishing the
leaders which would have been a hard job for Lincoln
merciful hart to meet out unto them but Enough of this
The Sun Is now Setting & Soon I will be Stowed away
In my Shelter tent, to Pass another weary night from
The But only to count one less in the time of our separa
-tion I long for the happy hour when I can be with you
again & the Dear little children will Rosey be Scard any in
the face. You Speak of having your Property Insured I do
not know whether it will do any good or not perhaps it was
best you also Speak of the flat condition of many articles
of Produce which I am glad to See I think it a fare Indicator
of Peace to our country I will now close my letter
by asking that you Remember me to the children one & all
tell them To wait with Patience I will be home after
a while Give my Respects to all The Neighbors
Tell your Pa I would like to see him tell father I think
I will Soon See the Close of this Rebelion when I can
Return home under the Peaceful folds of our gloryous
old flag when I hope to again open a corrispondince
with My Va. Cousins
