Benjamin died 28-Jan-1866 in West Union, Fayette, IA, buried: in Conneaut, Ashtabula, OH. Benjamin was a shoemaker and farmer. He served in the War of 1812 at Plattsburg and Willsboro, New York. Benjamin died while visiting his son, Benjamin F. Taft in Fayette Co., IA. Benjamin is likely buried in an unmarked grave in the City Cemetery, Conneaut, OH. Living in Ishua, Cattaraugus, NY in 1820 Census, Trumbull Co., OH 1838, West Salem, Mercer, PA 1840 Census, Pg. 205. Living in Kinsman, Trumbull, OH, 1850 Census, Pg. 285, Household 1083; Kinsman, Trumbull, OH, 1860 Census, Pg. 388, Household 736; Conneaut, Ashtabula, OH after 1860. The biography of his son, Reuben, includes the following account of Benjamin: "His father, a native of Taftstown, Vermont, was a shoemaker and farmer. He took part in the war of 1812, in the American army, and was engaged at the battles of Plattsburg and Aquania creek. About 1828 he moved to Ohio, settling on the site of Cleveland, but lost his land there by a defect in the title. He then came over to the Pennsylvania line, adjoining Mercer county, where he purchased a farm, but he eventually lost that also, by going as security for a friend charged with arson. He next moved to Vernon, near Kinsman, returning to his trade, and he continued to live there until 1854, when he moved to Greenwood township, Crawford county, this state, and bought one hundred and Sixty acres of land. After remaining there a year he returned to Vernon, where he lived three years, and next he was for three years again a resident of Kinsman. In 1864 he moved to Conneaut, Ashtabula county, Ohio, and he died in December, 1865." The biography of his son, Alanson, states: "His mother, Lucretia (McIntyre) Taft died in New York State and his father consequently married Deborah Vial. In October, 1833, his father moved to Trumbull County, Ohio and afterwards to Ashtabula County, where he lived until his death which occurred while on a visit at West Mission, Iowa." The 8 Feb 1866 issue of the Conneaut [Ohio] Reporter states: "Died - In Fayette, Fayette County, Iowa, Jan 28, B. E. Taft, aged 71 years. The remains of the deceased were brought to this place for burial." Additional Source: Our County and Its People: A historical and memorial record of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, W. A. Children by Philura Hawley:
Children by Eudolpha Morrea:20. i Lucretia Taft, b. ABT 1843 in New York. A Lucretia Taft is found in the 1860 Machias, Cattaraugus, NY census living in the household of H.E. Andrews. She is 2 households away from James L. Felton (prior to his marriage to Ella). Also in the town is Phebe (Taft)
Wiley. This is likely Seymour's daughter Lucretia.+ 21. ii Thaddeus William b. ABT 1845.
22. iii Lucy Taft, b. 7-Dec-1847 in Ohio. She married James Duffy Coyle, married 10-Aug-1867 in Pennsylvania, b. 10-Jan-1834, d. 25-Jan-1913 in Crawford Co., PA, buried: in Mageetown Cemetery. Lucy died 27-Feb-1869 in Crawford Co., PA, buried: in Mageetown Cemetery. No reference is made to a daughter Lucy in the 1884 Crawford Co., WI biography of Seymour. She is shown as a daughter in the 1850 census. Two identical photographs are in the possession of Richard Felton, Rohnert Park, CA, a descendent of Ella Taft. One is marked Mrs. Lucy Coyle - Aunt. The other is marked Lucy Taft Coyle - May 1869. Per the Coil-Coyle family history by Maurine E. Struthers, Jan 1984, pages 57-59, Lucy married James Duffy Coyle on 10 Aug 1867 and died on 27 Feb 1869. Their only son, Louis, died on 9 Sep 1870. There is a Lewis Coyle, age 1, living in the Morgan and Jane MaGee household in the 1870 Rome Twp., P.O. Centerville, Crawford, PA census, Pg. 457, Household 140. Per the Coil-Coyle history, Jane (Coyle) MaGee was the sister of James Coyle. The Coil-Coyle book states that James attended the State Normal School in Edinboro, PA where he met and married Lucy who had also prepared to teach.

4. Phebe A. Taft, b. 4-Jun-1825 in Cattaraugus Co., NY. She married Julius J. Wiley, married in New York, b. 1818 in Livingston Co., NY, d. 14-Jul-1899 in Ashton, Osceola, MI. Phebe died 6-Aug-1906 in Dinora Twp., Lake, MI, buried: in Ashton, Osceola, MI. Living in Alexander, Genesse, NY, Pg. 140 in the 1850 census; Machias, Cattaraugus, NY, Pg. 461 in the 1860 census; Wayland, Allegan, MI, Pg. 408, Household 23 in the 1870 census; Ashton, Lincoln Twp., Osceola, MI, Pg. 95B, Household 197 in the 1880 census; Watson Twp., Allegan, MI, ED 30, Sheet 12, Household 261 in the 1900 census. In the 1900 census, Phebe, a widow, was living with her daughter Mary Simkins and stated that she had 8 children with 4 still living. The existence of Phebe as a daughter is unclear. Phebe's death certificate lists her father as Benjamin Taft with no mother listed. She was born in Cattaraugus Co., NY. No census records for Benjamin E. Taft have been positively identified for 1830 to confirm a daughter in the household. In 1840 Benjamin E. Taft was living in West Salem, Mercer, PA. The census supports his second family, but would not account for Phebe, age 15. Paula Wilkinson's theory is that Phebe may have stayed with some McIntyre relatives after her father's marriage to Deborah Vial. At least one McIntyre family (Joseph McIntyre) moved from Cattaraugus Co., NY to Wayland, Allegan Co., MI in 1870. Although my records indicate that Phebe is buried in Ashton, Osceola, MI, her death certificate is found in Lake Co., MI, Record No. 32. Violet went to her Aunt Dorothy (Elmendorf) Chapman, Myrtle to her Aunt Emeline (Coleman) Taft. The three youngest were adopted, William by a Sonnenstein or Sonstein, Rose by a DuCate or Ducket, and Maude by a Brocht. There is no evidence that John Roghers ever spelled his name with an "H".
