Descendents of John and Rachel (Smith)
McGahen/McGhan

1. John McGahen, b. ABT 1767, New York. He married Rachel Smith, b. New York, (daughter of Henry Smith) d. BEF 1831, Whitby Twp., Ontario, Canada. John died BEF 1820, Whitby Twp., Ontario, Canada. Ref: History of Erie Co., Pennsylvania (1884), Pg 208; Whitby, Ontario Deed #7111 (1830). In 1820 Rachel and 5 of the children were living in Conneaut Twp., Erie, PA near her son's Henry and John Jr. in separate households. John Sr. apparently died before 1820, possibly in Erie Co., PA. It is unlikely Rachel would have moved there alone with the family. By 1830 they all had left, probably returning to Whitby Twp., Ontario. In 1880, daughter Elizabeth lists NY as John and Rachel's birthplace. Whitby Deed #40916 selling land to David Stafford in May 1851, indicates John's children as heirs to Rachel McGahen. This was a quit claim deed in the amount of One Dollar. An 1804 listing of Whitby inhabitant lists John's household as having 6 males, 3 females. Whitby Church of Christ records dated October 15, 1831 refer to a Rachel McGahan (dead). John McGahen of Whitby, age 34, is listed as signing a Loyalist Oath of Allegiance in 1801. Rachel: Family history says that Rachel may have been Indian. This legend has passed down through various lines of John and Rachel descendents. All have pointed to tribes that are not related to the area in which the family lived.  It is possible that her father's wife may have been Indian.  If so, she was probably from a tribe in Upstate New York.

George Dehart has not been located in the 1870 census. He apparently returned to Grant Co. between 1860-62 as his daughter Martha died there. Then he apparently returned to Michigan. Based on the birthplaces of his children Lewis and Anna, it would seem that he was back in Michigan by 1868. Elizabeth: By 1880 Elizabeth (Woodman) Dehart remarried. Per the LDS IGI she married Elleridge/Ellridge Burbank in 1878 in Ottawa Co., MI. The IGI records list Elizabeth's name as Elizabeth Dekhank and Elizabeth Wordman.
