The History of Chesterfield states William Potter, born 3 Dec 1778, son of Barnabus and Mary Potter. William was in Waterford, VT in the 1800 census and St. Johnsbury, VT in 1820. The family moved to Barnston, Quebec, Canada around 1824/5 which is a few miles from the Vermont border and remained there for about 10 years. Mary: In August 1834, William Potter purchased land in Washington Twp., Erie, PA. Although no probate file exists, William apparently died in the Spring of 1837. His estate sale was 13 May 1837, filed 12 Nov 1844, Docket #11944. Mary Potter was listed as head of household in the 1840 Erie Co. Census and was living with her son, Bethuel, in the 1850 census. She is not found in 1860 so aparently died between 1850-60.

Marriage was witnessed by Daniel Dearborn and Edward Potter. Bridget: Bridget's last name is possibly Cooney.

10. iii William Potter b. 27-Feb-1804, Caledonia Co., VT, m. 26-Apr-1824, in Caledonia Co., VT, Mary Lang. The 1830 census of Barnet, Caledonia, VT shows four children in the family. William is listed in the 1828-9 Ontario Militia Nominal Rolls living in the Whitby, Ontario area, age 22. Their family reportely moved to Michigan. The book, Descendents of Nicholas Potter lists William's wife as Mary Lang. There is also a marriage between a William Potter and Mary Sutherland on 1 Sep 1831 in Whitby Twp. witnessed by Daniel Dearborn and Edward Potter. This is possibly a second marriage for William.

Daniel: Daniel was living at Lyle Twp., Mower Co., MN with several of his children in the 1870 census. Daniel and Sally and their children were living at East Whitby, Ontario in the 1851 Census. Elizabeth: Per Merrit's Civil War Pension file, Merrit is reported to have abandoned Elizabeth between 1894-1901 and moved to Colorado. Elizabeth claims that Merrit was an alcoholic and abused her. She petitioned for 1/2 of Merrits pension between Sep 1924 and Feb 1929, apparently unsuccessfully. The file indicated she faced a mountain of red tape. No further referenced is found in the file after 1929. At that time she would have been about 86 and likely had died. She was living in Lone Rock, Richland, WI at the time.

Living in Lyle Twp., Mower, MN in the 1870 census near his brother-in-law, Daniel Dearborn. It would appear that Edward might have lived in Canada prior to moving to Minnesota. Although the one son living with him in 1870 was born in Pennsylvania, Edward is not located there in 1850-60. Edward is listed in the 1828-9 Ontario Militia Nominal Rolls living in the Whitby, Ontario area, age 20. Edward witnessed the marriage of his brother William Potter in Whitby on 1 Sep 1831.
