He was one of the first farmers to use and promote the use of commercial fertilizer. The first test of Boron, a widely used ingredient in alfalfa today, was conducted on his farm in 1948. He was the first farmer in Christian County to raise a measured and documented 100 bushels of corn to the acre. He was the first farmer in the state of Missouri to raise certified orchard grass seed and delivered the first load of fescue seed ever processed ny the Nixa Hardware and Seed Company. He received many, many, local, county, and state awards for diversified farming, soil conservation, balanced farming, and leadership in the agriculture extension programs. In 1960 he discovered a second passion in life when he purchased a Jumbo steam traction engine just like the one he ran for his father when he was 13 years old. From that beginning grew a collection of immaculately restored steam traction engines. In 1965, at the age of 70, he was invited to demonstrate one of his steam engines at Silver Dollar City's National Festival of Craftsman. For the next 25 years he demonstrated at Silver Dollar City with as many as three engines. He spent many hours visiting with steam enthusiast from all over the nation. At the age of 94 he reluctantly retired due to health. Preceding him in death were his wife, Aggie; a daughter, Aly Evelyn Scholten; and two sisters, Eula Hulse Claussen and Lennie Powell. Survivors include three children, Edith Herndon, Mount Terrace, Washington, Dwight McCauley, Richmond, Indiana, and Jim McCauley, and his wife Delma, Nixa, Missouri; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 30th, 1997, in Adams Funeral Home, 109 N. Truman Blvd., Nixa. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
