National Census Returns
Great Britain
In Great Britain, the National Census was taken every 10 years from 1801, except in the war year of 1941. The Censuses of 1801 to 1831 were mostly statistical, and most returns have been destroyed. Returns from 1841 onwards are held by the Public Record Office, except for the 1931 returns, which were totally destroyed by fire on 19 December 1942.

United States
In the US, the Federal Census has been taken every 10 years since 1790, pursuant to Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution:
Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.
Much of the 1790 Census was destroyed by the British during the War of 1812, and the 1890 Census was almost totally destroyed by fire.
