A Brief Summary of the Descendents of Jacob Stahlman to Paul Herbert Stahlman The following is a brief summary of the lineage and ancestors of Paul Herbert Stahlman, which he compiled in the latter years of his life, which I have edited to include the results of my own research into the Stahlman Lineage from Jacob Stahlman to my grandfather, Paul Herbert Stahlman. If anyone has any corrections or additions they would like to see incorporated herein, please drop me a line at my e-mail address at the bottom of this page or at the table of contents. Please feel free to browse all of this site. I'm always looking to improve it, so I welcome input and additional information. Stahlman’s notes Originally edited March 16, 2003
by Steven Andrew Stahlman The First Generation: Jacob Stahlman Jacob Stahlman was born in Germany
circa 1730-40 as best guess. He immigrated to
America, traveling on the ship “Duke of Wirtenberg”, arriving in
Philadelphia, PA on October 16, 1751. List 176C from Rotterdam, Holland and
Cowles, England. Passenger list 169 shows Jacob Stahlman entered, as signed by
self, not with an “X”. On the same day of his arrival he applied for and was
granted citizenship from the British government. This information is taken from
“Pennsylvania German Pioneers”, volume 1 by Sharsburger, pages 475 and 476
and “Duke of Wirtenberg” list 176C at the court house in Philadelphia, PA.
He appears to have married Anna Mary Lemmerin in February 1758 in Wilmington,
New Castle Delaware. His second wife may be Catherine Chersherin, married in
November 1759 also at Wilmington, New Castle Delaware. It is assumed that he settled in what was then Lancaster County, PA. In 1778, records show that a young man we suppose to be a son of Jacob enlisted in the Lancaster County Militia. That man was “private” John Stahlman. The Second Generation: John (Johann) Stahlman The son of Jacob Stahlman. John
(Johann) was born about 1758 in what was then Berks County, PA. John then
acquired large land holdings in what is now Schuykill County, PA. (Formed from
Berks and Northhampton Counties in 1811). John married Eleanor Nellie McCrory in
1785 and lived with her in Lower Mahantongo Township in Schuylkill County. She
died on March 18, 1846 in Limestone Township, Clarion County, PA. John died
November 12, 1823 in Deep Creek Valley, Lower Mahantongo Township in Schuykill
County. He served as a private in the Pennsylvania Berks County Militia.
About 1836-37 Eleanor and all of John’s sons except Solomon went to
Clarion County, PA and settled in Red Bank and Limestone Townships. John had
eleven children. Solomon and most of his descendents spelled their last name
“Stallman” in lieu of the correct original spelling of “Stahlman”.
John Seniors. children #’s 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 were born at Deep Creek Valley, Schuylkill Co., Pa. Solomon did not go to Clarion County. He
and some of his descendents spelled the last name “Stallman". Nancy died
in Berks County. Jeremiah, John Jr., Samuel, Jacob and Gabriel went to Clarion
County sometime after 1837. John Seniors’ will was made September 01, 1823 and
probated November 12, 1823 in Pottsville, Pa (Mahantango Township, Schuylkill
County, Pa., in book volume 1, pages 86-87). In 1811, Schuylkill County was
formed from Berks and Northhampton Counties. Below is a record of John Stahlman
senior’s children’s marriages:
Eva and Anna Maria Reid were sisters. The Third Generation: Jeremiah Stahlman The son of John (Johann) Stahlman. Jeremiah was born March 17, 1794 in Deep Creek Valley, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Catherine Young (1826?). She was born in 1800-02. However, one source, The “Jefferson County Pennsylvania – Her Pioneers and People” published 1917 reports that his Jeremiah’s wife’s name was Elizabeth (Cornelius Stahlman biography) (assume 1816-17 as the date of this marriage). The “History of Jefferson County” published 1888 reports Catherine Young as Jeremiah’s wife under Gabriel Stahlman’s biography. Perhaps both are correct and the first, Elizabeth, may have died in Schuylkill County before the move to Clarion County. Jeremiah moved to Clarion County about 1836-37 with his mother and brothers. Jeremiah died in December 1866 in Limestone Township, Clarion County and may be buried on his farm there, exact location unknown. Jeremiah had eleven children, but was his wife or wives Elizabeth Catherine or Catharina Sarah Young????
Below is a record of Jeremiah
Stahlman’s children’s marriages:
Elizabeth and Margaret Shaffer were
sisters (daughters of Simon Petrus Shaffer and Margaret (Himes) Shaffer. Anna M.
was Elizabeth’s and Margaret’s cousin. She was the daughter of John Shaffer
Jr. and Elizabeth (Imhoff) Shaffer. Christina Himes was Margaret Himes’
sister. The Fourth
Generation: William Lloyd Stahlman The son of Jeremiah Stahlman. William was born March 2, 1837 in Berks County, Pa and died April 17, 1919. He moved to Clarion County with his parents sometime just after his birth. He is buried at St. James Cemetery, Ringgold Township, Jefferson County, Pa. William married Margaret Shaffer on March 2, 1859. Margaret was born in 1838 and died March 7, 1875. Her father was Simon Shaffer and her mother was Margaret Himes. William Lloyd Stahlman and Margaret had seven children. Margaret and two of her daughters, Amanda and Rachel, are buried together at the Shannondale Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Red Bank Township, Clarion County, Pa. William and Margaret's children were:
(1) John Henry married Ida Unknown, (2) Mary married Henry Brosious. (5) Phoebe married Daniel Maurer, (6) Philip Wallace married Josephine Frank. After Margaret’s death, William Lloyd then married Mary Elsie Maurer. Mary Elsie Maurer was born August 14, 1850 and died July 20, 1933. She and William are buried at St. James Church, Ringgold Township, Jefferson County, Pa. Together William Lloyd and his second
wife, Mary Elsie had four children:
(1) Foster married Dora Morrison,
(2) Ezra married Arcia Cole, (3) Daniel married Clara St. James, (4) Clara
married Elmer Brenton Morrison. The Fifth
Generation: Simon Peter Stahlman The son of William Lloyd Stahlman. Simon was born on January 31, 1867 at Shannondale, Clarion County, Pa. He married Annie Elizabeth Moser on September 05, 1889. Annie was born on October 27, 1865 at Grange, Jefferson Co., Pa. Her parents were Daniel Moser and Emiline (London) Moser. Annie died on December 12, 1918 during the swine flu epidemic. She is buried, along with Simon, at Ebenezer Cemetery, Grange, Pa. Simon and Annie had five children:
After his wife Annie died, Simon married
Barbara Gaston on October 13, 1920. They had no offspring from the marriage.
Barbara was born December 02, 1862 and died 1939. After Barbara died, Simon entered into his third marriage with Sarah (Shaffer) Hoch on November 13, 1941. They also had no offspring from the marriage. Sarah was born December 26, 1870 and died in March 1951. Simon died on January 02, 1946. The Sixth
Generation: Paul Herbert Stahlman The son of Simon Peter Stahlman. Paul was born September 15, 1897 at Grange Pennsylvania. Paul married Martha Marie Slawson, of Brockway, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 1922. Martha Marie was born on March 21, 1903 in Warsaw Township, Jefferson County, Pa. Her parents were Franklin "Frank" Slawson and Mary Martha (Bower) Slawson. “Marie” died March 19, 1985 and Paul died shortly after on April 23, 1985. Both are buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Grange, Jefferson County, Pa. They had twelve children:
