Theodore Cummings Howe was born on 4 May 1846 in Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, son of Daniel and Hannah (Lincoln) (Cook) Howe.1
Theodore enlisted at Braintree as a private 7 Dec 1863, in the 3d Mass. Cavalry, and was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as a quartermaster sergeant 28 Sep 1865. He was made a first lieutenant, 5 Oct 1865. He participated in these engagements in the Shenandoah Valley— Front Royal, Luray Road, Woodstock and Edinburg.1
He married Sarah Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Jonathan Ball Brown and Elizabeth Green Clark, on 17 March 1867 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts.1
