Ruth Emma Hudson was born on 14 October 1908 in Granger, Utah, on a farm, the adopted daughter of William and Edith Binnall Hudson.1

Ruth Emma Hudson was the guiding force of a network of family-owned theaters, started her career writing Mormon roadshows in the 1930s. She eventually wrote more than 80 plays, mentored countless actors and became a recognizable face in plays, films and commercials.

She and her husband, Nathan Hale , who died in 1994, started a legacy of family theaters that includes Glendale Centre Theatre in California, Hale Center Theater in Orem, Hale Summer Theater in Grover and Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley City. Another family-owned theater was under construction in Gilbert, Ariz. at the time of her death.

Though Ruth Hale enjoyed performing, she considered writing her true vocation. Her sentimental, squeaky-clean plays continue to be produced at the family theaters; several were published by Samuel French and became popular around the nation.2

She married James Nathan Hale, son of William Whittle Hale and Ella Viola Brown, on 22 December 1933 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, and had seven children.3

She died on 22 April 2003 at age 94 . She had been in poor health since breaking her hip a few months ago.2 She and James Nathan Hale were buried in Taylorsville Memorial Park, Taylorsville, Utah.3
