He was the son of Rutherford Hayes and Sophia Birchard.

Rutherford Birchard Hayes was a politician, lawyer, military leader and the 19th President of the United States (1877–1881).


He married Lucy Ware Webb ("Lemonade Lucy") on 30 December 1852 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, at her mother's home.

He died on 17 January 1893 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio, at age 70.

     Rutherford Platt Hayes was born on 24 June 1858 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was the son of Rutherford Birchard Hayes and Lucy Ware Webb ("Lemonade Lucy"). He was educated at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan.
He was graduated in 1880 from Cornell University, and did post-graduate work at Boston Institute of Technology.

Rutherford Platt Hayes was a bank clerk at Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio, , for a time but devoted his life to promoting libraries. He also helped develop Asheville, North Carolina, into a health and tourist resort.

He died in 1927.

The census of 22 June 1870 shows George L. Hayes, 35, and William F. Hayes, 33 living at P.O. Oxford, Norway, Oxford County, Maine. |They were listed as "supported by the town on the town farm."6

The census of 1880 shows William F. Hayes, an overseer in a cotton mill, and Leonora Hayes, listed with George W. Hayes living at Lewiston.7
