Relationship=3rd cousin 6 times removed of Steven George Levine.
William Hale was born on 19 August 1764 in Newbury, Newtown (afterward West Newbury), Essex County, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Capt. Oliver Hale and Judith Hale.1
He studied medicine in Massachusetts, and was a teacher there. Emigrated to Virginia in or shortly before 1790, and settled in practice of medicine in Bedford county.2
He married Sarah Quarles about 1791 in Bedford County, Virginia.2
He lived in the practice of his profession for a few years after his marriage in Bedford county, where his two oldest children were born, and perhaps the next one or two. Then removed to Guilford county, N. C then back to Henry county, Va. In Mar 1812, he removed to Darlington District, S. C. where he spent the remainder of- his life, living first at Darlington C. H and after a few years on his farm a few miles from that village at a place called Society Hill.2
Dr. Hale was a slave-owner and left a pretty numerous body of them. He provided for his children as they were married and settled in life, and by his will to his wife the use of a plantation of about 800 acres, with the slaves to cultivate it and a full stock, etc.
His son Samuel Q. says he was the most amiable of men, a kind husband, parent and master, and lived and died without an enemy. He was a consistent and active member of the Presbyterian Church, and always sustained the character of an upright, honorable and high-minded citizen and a skillful physician.3
