He married Ellen "Nell" Lewis Herndon on 25 October 1859 in Calvary Episcopal Church, New York, New York County, New York.
He died on 18 November 1886 in New York, New York County, New York, at age 57 of a massive cerebral hemorrhage.1 He and Ellen "Nell" Lewis Herndon were buried in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menards, Albany County, New York.

Chester Alan Arthur Jr. was born in 1864. He was the son of Chester Alan Arthur and Ellen "Nell" Lewis Herndon. He was graduated in 1885 from Princeton University and went on to Columbia Law School, but rather than follow in his father's footsteps, he chose instead to become a gentleman of leisure. President Arthur on his deathbed warned his son not to go into politics. Alan Arthur traveled extensively, maintained a fine stable of horses, and relied on polo for exercise.
He married Myra Townsend in 1900/1. He and Myra Townsend were divorced in 1927. Chester Alan Arthur Jr. moved to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado.
He married Rowena Graves in 1934.
He died in 1937.

The census of 1860 shows Wm. Arthur, 62, a Baptist clergyman with $6000 real estate and $1000 personal estate, and Malvina Arthur, 58, listed with Ann E. Arthur and Mary Arthur living at Watervliet, Albany County, New York. Also living there were Nancy Wilson, 20; and Marion Fidel, 17.2
He died on 27 October 1875 in Newtonville, Albany County, New York, at age 78.1
