After concluding his education in Newburyport Academy Capt. Hale went to New York, and was soon chosen secretary of the Atlantic Ins. Co. at its organization, Nov 1829. After two years' active service ill health compelled his resignation. He sought restoration to health on the ocean. He soon became captain of a ship, and followed the sea for 15 years, with the exception of the year 1835, when he was chosen vice-president and inspector of the Union Marine Ins. Co. of New York, but his health again failing, he resumed his place on the ship. He returned to Newburyport in 1846 where he held many offices of honor and trust.¹

He married Sophia Cutler Tenney on 4 January 1844.¹

He entered the office of the Merchants' Insurance Company of Boston, after completing his studies at Hampton Academy. His courteous manners, and fidelity in the discharge of his duties soon earned him promotion. He was chosen secretary of the Washington Insurance Company in 1825, and was sent in 1828 to New York as the manager of a branch office. After a year of marked success, he joined with the late Walter R. Jones in establishing the Atlantic Insurance Company of New York. His Boston friends showed their confidence in him by offering to subscribe $300,000 to the capital stock. He remained 25 years associated with Mr. Jones in the presidency of the company, and helped make it a leading insurance company in the country. He resigned his office in 1854, owing to continuous ill health. In their letter of regret the trustees say: "The company was established essentially through his active instrumentality." Mr. Hale retired with the respect of his associates, and with a handsome competency as the reward of his diligence.¹

He died on 26 February 1875 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 71, unmarried.¹
