     Chandler Hale was a a Republican.1
Chandler lived at Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine.1 He was born on 2 March 1873 in Washington, D.C.. He was the son of Eugene Hale and Mary Douglas Chandler. The census of June 1880 shows Chandler Hale in the household of Eugene Hale and May C. Hale, at Ellsworth.2 In 1892, Chandler Hale was assistant secretary of the American delegation to the International Bimetallic Conference in Brussells, Belgium.1 In 1897, Chandler Hale was secretary of American Embassy, Rome, Italy.1

He married Rachel S. Cameron on 28 September 1897. Between 1901 and 1905, Chandler Hale was secretary of American Legation and Embassy, Vienna, Austria.1 In 1907, Chandler Hale was secretary of the American delegation to the second peace conference in The Hague, Netherlands.1

From 1909 to 1913, Chandler Hale was third assistant U. S. Secretary of State.1

The census of 1910 shows Chandler Hale, a clerk with the Dept. of State, and Rachel C. Hale, listed with Chandler Hale Jr., Donald C. Hale, Mary C. Hale and Eugene H. Hale living at Washington, D.C.. Also in the household were two servants, Louise Aouse, 29, from Germany, and Nellie Lee, 30, from Ireland.3

He died in May 1951 at age 78.

As of from 1822 to 1850, Charles lived at lot 86 in the 3rd division, Sweden, Oxford County, Maine.2

[ It would appear that the informant may have underestimated the ages of Sarah and Asenath. ], and Sally Ricker, listed with Elbridge Gerry Hale, George Washington Hale, John Rupell Hale, Lovesta L. Hale, Susan Hale, Sarah J. Hale and Nancy Pierce Hale living at Waterford.3 On 2 February 1850, Charles Hale sold real estate in lot 86 in the 3rd division, Sweden. Charles conveyed this land, which was occupied by hime, to George W. Hale.4 [CR][CR]Charles and Sally Hale appeared on the census of 1850 at Waterford, with the following listing:

Sarah and Ellen Young were probably children of Charles' daughter, Lovista.5

The census of 16 June 1860 shows Charles Hale,

, living at Waterford.6 23 August 1860, a quitclaim was filed on land the north half of lot no. 37 in the 3rd division, Sweden, Oxford County, Maine. This was the land that George W. Hale had sold to Sally Hale in 1852. As she had died in 1858, all adult descendants signed a quitclaim to transfer ownership of the so-called "Bradstreet Lot" to Charles Hale. These descendants were Elbridge G. Hale an his wife Lucy H. Hale of Cambridge, MA; William Langley and his wife Asineth, of Somerset, MA; Horace A. Sawyer and his wife Sarah. of Lynn, MA; Lovista L. Young, a single woman; George W. Hale and his wife Clara A., of Waterford; John R. Hale and wife Eleanor; George Kneeland and wife Susan, of Lincoln, ME; and William Langley II and wife Anna, of New York City.

Charles sold this land for months later on 15 Dec 1860 to John B. Sanderson, yeoman, of Waterford.7

He died on 22 May 1863 at age 75.8 He was buried in Elm Vale Cemetery, Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.8
