He died on 26 January 1735/36 at age 5, possibly due to a terrible "pestilential distemper" of which, Rev. John Brown, minister then in the place, wrote, "over 200 children under ten vears of age died, in Haverhill alone, between Jan. 1, 1736, and Dec. 31, 1737."1,2

Benjamin Hale was born on 30 April 1735 in what was then known as Haverhill, Mass but on the running of the State line in 1740 was found to be in New Hampshire; this part then known as Haverhill District, N. H till 1749, when it was incorporated as Plaistow. In 1769 the easterly portion, including the homestead of Benjamin Hale, was set off as Atkinson.2 He was the son of Thomas Hale and Mary Smith.1

On the death of his father in 1759 he succeeded to the charge of his mother and younger sisters.2

He married Lydia White on 9 December 1762.2

Before the Revolutionary war he was first lieutenant of a troop of horse in the New Hampshire militia. On the alarm at Lexington he literally left his plow in the furrow and started for the scene of action, and was in active service at Bunker Hill though not regularly enrolled. At the breaking out of the war he was the father of six children, ranging from a little more than ten to less than one year old. Of course with such a family he could not enlist in the regular service, but more than half the whole term of the war down to his death he was, in one form or another, connected with the army and in the service of his country. He was present and took part as a volunteer in the battle of Saratoga in 1777, and assisted in the conducting of the prisoners to their permanent quarters.3

In June 1780, he and his wife joined the Congregational Church in Plaistow, and in November of the same year he was chosen deacon, his pastor being the Rev. Stephen Peabody.4 In the summer of 1781 his health began to fail and he died 4 Dec 1781, of a scrofulous disease of the throat.

His will was executed 23 Nov 1781, and proved in the Rockingham Probate Court 8 Jan 1782. It provides for his wife Lydia, whom he makes sole executrix, and gives the residue of the property to the two eldest sons, Joshua and Nicholas, they paying all debts and paying sums provided to each of the other children. At the outbreak of the war he was possessed of a handsome estate, and he evidently supposed at the execution of his will that he left his family well provided for; but the losses by the war, by his long absence from home and subsequent protracted illness, by the depression of business and the depreciation of the currency, and as his family always charged and believed, the bad faith and dishonesty of a prominent neighbor, the chief adviser of the wife and children, the estate, though showing an inventory of over £1,000, turned out insolvent. He owned a negro slave Cato, but his mistress, after her husband's death, refused to have him sold and gave him his freedom. Included in his estate was 1,000 acres of land in Corinth, Vt which sold at auction in 1784 for £170.5
