Edwin Lawrence Godkin1

Edwin Lawrence Godkin was born the son of James and Sarah (Lawrence) Godkin.1 He was educated at Sillcoates School, England, and at Queen's College, Belfast, Ireland, and was admitted to the English bar. He was war correspondent for the London Daily News during the Crimean War. He came to America in the autumn of 1856 as correspondent for the Daily News to write a series of articles upon social and political conditions in the Southern States. He studied in New York in the office of David Dudley Field and became a member of the New York bar. After the establishment of the "Nation," of which he became editor in 1865, he ceased to practice law and devoted himself to newspaper and literary work. He became editor and one of the proprietors of the New York Evening Post in 1881. He wrote a "History of Hungary" as a young man, and two volumes of his articles have been published in book form entitled "Problems of Democracy" and "Unforeseen Tendencies of Democracy."2
He married Frances Elizabeth Foote, daughter of Samuel Edmund Foote and Elizabeth Betts Elliott, on 27 July 1859 in Moyne, Ireland.1
He died on 21 May 1902 in Greenway House, Brixham, Devon, England.1

Hamilton "A System of Legal Medicine"; was appointed in 1903 by the Governor on a commission to investigate the "law's delay" in New York and suggest remedial legislation.3
