Jonathan Colby was born on 13 February 1762 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.3 He was the son of Abraham Colby and Elizabeth Blaisdell.1,2 He moved to Wood Hill, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, In the spring of 1768 with Willaby Colby and Sarah Sargent They started for their new home, his wife on horseback with her child in her arms. He soon built a frame house at the northeast corner of the intersection, east of the road where his son Philip afterwards lived. Their first log house stood a short distance south of where William A. Elliot lived in 1892, where his father, Abraham, with the youngest son, Jonathan, lived and died. William "Willie" Colby, and his wife, Frances, lived there until his death on 25 Jul 1969.4

He married Martha Alexander about 1784 in Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.1,5 He appeared on the census of 1 May 1791 in the household of his parents, Abraham Colby and Elizabeth Blaisdell, at Bow, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.6
Jonathan lived cared for his aged parents in their declining years, and inherited the homestead. Soon after the death of his father the house was superseded by a two story, single house, a few rods north of the old one, which crippled his resources and, having a large family, he was obliged to struggle to provide for their necessities.7

He died on 8 June 1831 in Bow, at age 69 . His house was sold to parties in Concord, and Silas Call moved it, on wheels, to the corner of State and Washington Streets, where, with an addition, it stood in fair condition as of 1894.7 He was buried in East Dunbarton Cemetery, Dunbarton, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.8
