He married Louisa Catherine Johnson on 26 July 1797 in All Hallows Barking-by-the Tower, London, England.

He died on 23 February 1848 in Washington, D.C., at age 80, at the United States Capitol. He and Louisa Catherine Johnson were buried in United First Parish Church, Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
