Col. Elisha Camp was born in 1786 in Sacket Harbor, Jefferson County, New York, son of Keziah (Durkee) Camp.1 He was graduated in 1804 from Columbia College with highest honors, as valedictorian, as then studied law. With his brother-in-law, Judge Sackett, he bought land in Jefferson County, N.Y. and arrived in Sackets Harbor in 1804, and soon became one of the most prominent men in the north country. He became a postmaster, militia officer, lawyer, New York state district attorney, politician, newspaper owner and editor, banker, and a substantial landowner with interests in local mills, Lake Ontario shipping, and land or water transportation that might benefit Sackets Harbor and the north country.

He at one time owned all the American side of the Thousand Islands. (This is given in one of the descriptive books of the Thousand Islands, and Miss Folger, his grand-daughter, remembers hearing her mother tell the same fact.)

He wrote numerous letters to, George Hale, a member of his wife's family and a prominent merchant first in Providence, R.I., and then in Glastonbury, Conn., relating to the sale of livestock, rum, pork, sugar, and other goods, as well as giving advice to a young merchant, and giving instruction as to the printing an displaying with geographical cards.

Elisha had interest in lake shipping and the promotion of roads, a canal, and railroads. From 1819 Camp led the agitation for a canal to connect Black river with Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor. The papers relating to this unsuccessful project "for diverting the surplus waters of the Black river into Pleasant or Mill creek and thence to Sackets Harbor" and to Camp's role as one of the surplus water commissioners include petitions to the legislature; advice from interested persons; subscription lists and receipts (1829 to 1831) for payments, with some in kind; construction contracts (1827 to 1832; accounts (1829 to 1832) for labor, excavations, supplies, complaints (1831 to 1837) by settlers, farmers, and rival interests over the flooding of roads and lands, over other mishaps, and over the surplus water taxes and threatened monopoly; contracts and leases for water rights along the canal; and drafts of speeches by Camp emphasizing local transportation needs in terms of Whig promises. Unfortunately the canal was never built.2,3

He married Sophia Hale, daughter of Col. George Hale and Hopeful Moseley, in 1811.1

He died in 1866.1
