John lived at Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was born on 27 April 1782 in Lancaster, son of Ephraim and Abigail (Carter) Carter. On 19 October 1803, John married Betsey Thurston in Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts. In 1804, son, Henry, was born. In 1805, daughter, Rebecca, was born. In 1807, daughter, Mary, was born. In 1808, son, Ephraim, was born. In 1811, daughter, Nancy, was born. On 28 December 1815, John's first wife, Betty (Thurston) Carter, died.
He married Betsy Daby, daughter of Simon Daby and Joanna Hale, on 18 December 1816 in Harvard. In 1822, daughter, Nancy, died.
He died on 3 July 1830 at age 48.
