"Mother died July 10. She had long been sick. About a week previous to her death a violent cough set in, which finally terminated her life. . . . Uncle Perley of Gardner called on us a few days since. He is well for a man of his age. He said he thought he should go to Boxford this fall. . . . There is no one left in our solitary dwelling but my sister Betsey and myself. My brother Allen lives in town. Brother Andrew died last fall—his family live about a mile from us. We have lately had letters from my brother and sister at Vienna, N. Y. Putnam often wishes to know if we have heard from Boxford.".2
