Sarah Marinda Bates was born on 2 February 1817 in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York, daughter of Cyrus and Lydia (Harrington) Bates.

Sarah Marinda Bates was a founder of the Anti-Polygamy Society in Salt Lake City and called herself a Mormon apostate.

She married Orson Pratt, son of Jared Pratt and Charity Dickinson, on 4 July 1836.

Mormon head honcho Joseph Smith unsuccesfully attempted to rape her on numerous occasions.

She died on 25 December 1888 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, at age 71.
