     Clara Lawrence Hale was born on 25 November 1846 in Sweden, Oxford County, Maine.3 She was the daughter of George Washington Hale and Clara Adeline Neal.1,2 Said to be "of Bridgton, Cumberland County, Maine."4 The census of 1850 shows Clara L. Hale, 3, in the household of George W. Hale and Clara A. Hale, at Sweden.5 She was born between 1853 and 1854 in Sweden.6,7 The census of 12 June 1860 shows Clara Lawrence Hale, 13, attending school, in the household of George W. Hale and Clara A. Hale, at South Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.3


The census of 1870 shows George W. Hale, 50, keeping a public house, with $3000 real estate and $1500 personal estate, and Clara L. Hale, 22, keeping house living at Lovell P.O., Waterford, Oxford County, Maine. With them were Sophrona Moran, 40, a housekeeper from Nova Scotia; Georgeanna Kilgore, 16, a housekeeper, and Frank Milicin, 16, working in the public house.8 On 19 January 1871, Clara Lawrence Hale bought land in part of the 6th lot in the sixth range, Waterford, Oxford County, Maine. She bought from Ashbel H. Cram of Portland for $300, land on the south side of Waterford Flat at the northwest corner of Caroline E. Brown's land, then southerly to the south end of the garden, then west to the land of John Kimball, then north to the road, then east back, together with all the door and window blinds which were saved from the fire that consumed the building "the Holt Stand." [This appears to have been "Waterford House" in Waterford Flat.]9

She married Irvin A. J. Colby, son of Samuel Colby and Louisa A. Colby, on 28 January 1873 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, .....Residence: Boston, Mass.

The census of 1 June 1880 shows I. A. Colby and Clara L. Hale, listed with Ina A. Colby living at Hotel St. Botolph on Dudley St, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.11


Clara L. Colby and Erving A. Colby Jr. were listed as parents on birth record of Clara Niel Colby on 10 October 1880 in Everett Av., Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.12

As of 1894, Clara lived at 1 Everett Ave., Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.13 7 November 1894, at the Probate Court of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, Clara Lawrence (Hale) Colby filed for seperate support. Their real estate was decribed at this time as consisting of lots numbered 9 and 11 as recorded with Middlesex South District Deeds Book of Plans No. 75, Plan 40, and recorded in book 2318, pages 521 and 525.14

The census of 1900 shows Clara H. Colby, 50, and Claire N. Colby, 19, a vocalist, not employed for 3 months living at 19 Alexander St, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. They were lodgers in the home of widow Margaret Grant, 61, from Canada.15
As of from 1909 to 1939, Clara lived at Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.16

The census of 1 June 1910 shows Clara L. Colby, 55, listed with Ina Colby and Clair Colby living at 43 Everett St, Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Clara L. Hale is incorrectly listed as a widow. Daughters Ina and Clair are both shown employed on the stage.17

The death record of Claire Neal Woodward on 13 March 1916 lists the mother as Clara Dale

     James Stillman Hartford was born on 29 December 1827 in New Hampshire.1

He married Esther J. Cates, daughter of Nathan Cate and Maxamilla Colby, about 1853 in New Hampshire.2

The census of 1860 shows James S. Hartford, a farmer with $125 personal estate, and Ester J. Hartford, listed with Emma J. Hartford, Ernest A. Hartford, Annetta A. Hartford and Isabel E. Hartford living at Wilmot, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.3

He died on 21 June 1908 in Epsom, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, at age 80.4

     Maybeth Irene Hemphill was born on 18 May 1933 in Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, daughter of Earl and Ella Hemphill.1

She married Maurice Howard Colby, son of Frank Edgar Colby Jr. and Hazel Mabel Myers, on 13 May 1952 in Machias, Washington County, Maine.2

She died on 9 September 1999 in North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, at age 66 of congestive heart failure.1 She was buried in Green Cemetery on Londonderry Branch Turnpike East, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.1
