acific White-Sided Dolphin(Cetacea Delphinidae Lagenorhynchus obliquidens)
| We enjoyed watching this dolphin at the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California. He was very alert to a group of toddlers running back and forth in front of the glass and he would swim back and forth, keeping up with them. After he had eaten his fill of his lunch (anchovies), he played with one, tossing it around in the water, then catching it and swimming around with it in his mouth. He did this several times, obviously playing.
The two dolphins that were at Steinhart Aquarium were moved to a larger breeding facility in Texas in 1996. I am told by a staff member at Steinhart Aquarium that they are much happier in their new home. The old dolphin tank is now a tropical shark tank. |
