Michael John Collins was born at Woodfield, Clonakilty, in County
Cork in 1890. Although most biographies list his date of birth as October
16, 1890, his tombstone lists his date of birth as October 12, 1890. He was
the third son and the youngest of eight children. His father, also called Michael
Collins [Death:1897
Place: Clonakitty Co. Cork, Ireland], was 75 years of age when Michael
junior was born. On his deathbed the father pointed to his youngest child
and urged his grieving family to mind Michael because, 'One day he'll be a
great man. He'll do great work for Ireland.' Michael was 6 years of age at
the time.

Michael's father, Michael John Collins was sixty years old when he
married a local girl, Marianne O'Brien.
Marianne was only twenty-three, but they were apparently happy and went on
to have eight children. Michael, the youngest, was born when his father was
seventy-five. [ Source: Michael Collins' Web Page

Michael John Collins (Irish
name Micheál Ó Coileáin; October 16, 1890 – August 22,
1922), an Irish revolutionary leader, served as Minister for Finance in the Irish
Republic, as Director of Intelligence for the IRA,
as a member of the Irish delegation during the Anglo-Irish
Treaty negotiations, as Chairman
of the Provisional Government and as Commander-in-Chief of the National
Army. He was assassinated
in August 1922, during the Irish
Civil War. Members and supporters of the political party Fine
Gael hold in particular respect his memory. [Source: Michael Collins (Irish leader) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]
Surprisingly his closest friend in London was also his best friend back in
Cork, his cousin Sean Hurley.
The Assassins
The fifteen men accused of shooting Collins on August 1922, Includes a
couple of familiar family names:
SEAN GALVIN
He had been patrolling the hill on horseback and galloped in to the action
when the shooting started. He brought the word to the anti-Free State
meeting in a nearby house that Collins had been shot, and later claimed to
have shot Collins himself.
JIM HURLEY
Fired a Mauser at the car in which Collins was travelling, shattering the
windscreen and stopping the clock, and giving Emmet Dalton the impression
they were under machine gun fire. Some maintain Collins was killed by a
Mauser bullet, but Hurley is said to have left the ambush by the time
Collins was hit. [ More on the Assassins at The Lost Leader: Michael Collins]
