Eighth Generation

184. Timothy P. BABCOCK was born about 1756.565
by Hugh E. Voress, 1977

Timothy P. Babcock, Sr., was born c 1756 and died on Feb 26, 1828. He married Ann or Anna Stewart, born 1755, died Mar 23, 1839. Timothy deeded land, part of lot 49, Truxton, Cortland Co, NY to son Nehemiah and part of lot 48, Fabius, Onondaga Co., NY to son Benjamin, in 1828. In 1830, his wife, Anna, acknowledged the deed to Benjamin, stating she was the widow of Timothy. Tradition in the family is that Timothy P. with his wife came to NY state from CT. Other Babcock and Stewart families went first from CT to north central MA at an early date and some of them later migrated to either Cortland or Onondaga counties as now constituted. However, Timothy's grandsons, Noble and Timothy P. Jr., stated in the 1880 Census, that their father, Nehemiah Babcock, born 1782, was born in NY state and their mother in CT. If this is true, Timothy P. Babcock, Sr., must have migrated to NY state prior to 1782. In the 1790 census of NY State, there was only one Timothy Babcock listed. He was living in Eastentown, Albany Co., NY and had three sons and two daughters living with him in addition to his wife. In the 1800 census he was living in Herkimer Co., Latchfield Twp., NY. The following article appeared in the DeRuyter Gleaner in 1928, written by one of his descendants, Jennie Neal. "Marker proposed for Pioneer Settler's site" "On a hilltop between Keeney and Cowles Settlements, just over the Cuyler line in the town of Fabius, Onondaga Co., NY on a farm now owned and occupied by Jay Marsh, are still standing, marble slabs that mark the graves of two of our early settlers, Timothy Babcock and wife, Anne Stewart Babcock. Ten of their children are buried there. Anne S. Babcock, born in the year 1755, was a descendant of King James Stewart of England and Mary, Queen of Scotts. Timothy Babcock lived near Utica NY, but owing to the prevalence of fever and ague on the low lands, he exchanged his home for a few hundred acres of land on the hill where he died in 1828, aged 71 years; Annie his wife, died in the year 1839 at the age of 84 years. Their home stood a few rods from where they were buried. The land still shows evidence of neatness and thrift. There is a raised path of earth around the well which is partly filled with stones. Part of the stone wall still stands". There is no evidence of the house, graves, etc. today (1972). Timothy apparently moved to Onondaga Co. sometime between 1800 and 1810.

He appeared in the census in 1810 in Fabius Twp., Onondaga Co., NY.566
