Seventh Generation

64. Dugald A. MCARTHUR was born before 7 Jul 1765 in Argyll, Scotland.357

At this point, there is no way to prove without a doubt who Dugald's parents were. There are two possibilities available. #1 Donald McArthur and Mary McArthur had a son baptized 7 July 1765 in Kilchrenan and Dalavich parish(Upper Sonnachan), which is only 12 miles from Inveraray. Since Dugald's grave stone at Hume Cemetery states he died 25 April 1852 at the age of 88 that would make him born in 1764. Also, Dugald's first child is named Donald and he had a daughter, Mary. Note that I could find no other children for this couple in either the Kilchrenan & Dalavich parish where Upper Sonnachan is located or in the Inveraray parish where Dugald was married and had some of his children baptized. #2 Charles McArthur and Effie McPhedren had a son, Dougald, born 20 Sep 1761 in Inveraray where Dugald married and baptized the oldest of his children. Dugald has no children named Charles or Effie. Also Duncan Beaton writes in "Auchentiobart and the MacArthurs", "John and Dugald would seem to have been brothers from the naming pattern of their offspring. It is also very likely that their father's name had been Donald."

He emigrated in 1819 from Kaimes, Argyll to Lobo Twp. Middlesex Co., Ontario.221,358

In "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the Canada before Confederation, by Donald Whyte, Vol 1, pg. 443" it states that Dougald's children were: Donald, James, John, Archibald, Colin, Mary, and Janet.

A grandson, D.J. McArthur's obituary said his "grandparents on both sides of the family emigrated from Argyleshire, Scotland, to Ontario in 1819, the journey across the Atlantic occupying thirteen stormy weeks."

He owned land on 20 Sep 1820 in Lobo Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada: N 1/2 Lot 13, conc. 5220 (FGrant Reg 01, series C13, Vol 146, pg 044) He lived in Lobo Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada in 1851.359 (With son, Archibald, and family) He died on 25 Apr 1852 in Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada.360 He was buried after 25 Apr 1852 in Lobo Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada.361 (Hume Cemetery, Lot 9, conc. 8, Lobo Twp., north side, row 6, plot B. On NW side of gray mottled granite monument is engraved: "In memory of Douglad McArthur died Apr. 25, 1852 aged 88 GRANDPA, Natives of Argyleshire, Scotland.") Dugald A. MCARTHUR and Margaret CAMPBELL were married on 29 Jan 1795 in Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland.362
Margaret lived in Kenmore which is about 6 miles SW of Inveraray on Loch Fyne. Dugald lived inland from there about a mile.

AUCHENTIOBART and the MACARTHURS
By Duncan Beaton
The best time to visit Auchentiobart (1) is in spring when the wild daffodils are in bloom. Sometime during the period of habitation they were collected and planted alongside the track up to the houses, and there they remain.
The name Auchentiobart has sinister connotations locally and one old lady in Furnace translated it as 'field of repentance'. Going along with this view, it could translate as 'field of the sacrificial offering' from Achadh an t-iobairt (2). More prosaically it is in all probability Achadh an tiobairt (3), 'field of the well'. Certainly there is a well (4) to the front of the site. The old 6" 0. S. map shows the site of a chapel to the south west of the other buildings. This spot could be pointed out on a heathery knoll until it was recently engulfed by forestry.
The township was either uninhabited or did not exist when the Hearth Tax Rolls were completed in July 1694, although the Physical Audit took place up to 3 years earlier. The census instigated by the 5th Duke in 1779 found one family there - 40 years-old Niven MacVicar, a herd, and his wife and 2 children. The MacVicars were to remain in Auchentiobart for several generations.
The birth of a son, Duncan, to John McArthur and his wife Catherine McPhedran in 1788 heralded that family's arrival in the township. Two years earlier they had had another son, Donald, in Cladich, Loch Awe. Over the next fifteen years they had a further 3 sons and one daughter, Mary, all born in Auchentiobairt.
Another McArthur family, Dugald and his wife Margaret Campbell, had 5 children in Auchentiobairt during ten year period from 1795 onwards. However none of this family were living in the township in the next generation.
John and Dugald would seem to have been brothers from the naming pattern of their offspring. It is also very likely that their father's name had been Donald.
The next generation had 3 sons of John all marrying and living in the township. Duncan (b. 1788) married Catherine McTavish and had 3 children between 1813-19. Thereafter they disappear from local records. His younger brother Dugald (b. 1800) married and had a family in the 1830s which was still in the township in the 1860s. The eldest brother, Donald (c.1786-1877), married Lillias Bell from Kilmun, Glenaray, and his youngest son William (1835-1916) was the last inhabitant of Auchentiobart. Another brother, Archibald was born in 1792.

Editorial Notes: (1) Above Pennymore, which is on the old coast road from Furnace to Inveraray. NNo43015. A recent F. C. road passes close below the site, making access on foot easy.
(2) Pronounced 'Ach-ant-eepurt'
(3) Pronounced 'Ach-an-cheeparst'
(4) The well was accidentally wrecked 25 years ago.
