"The inscription on the oldest tombstone in this cemetery bears mute
testimony to its founder: In Memory, of, John Campbell, Died Jan. 4,
1837, Age 61 Years, Also, His Wife Jane, Age 61 years, Died Aug. 10,
1838, Who Emigrated from Inverary Parish, Argyleshire, Scotland, 1823
to Lobo, C.W. He was the founder of this burial ground.
John Campbell, his wife Jane and their two sons John B. and
Sylvester, arrived in Lobo from the Port of Greenock and took up three
hundred acres of land on Conc. 3 just east of the village of Komoka.
The site of the cemetery is part of that property; another part is
owned by Roy Cudney. The graves of John B. and Sylvester are near
that of their parents.
The first trustees of the cemetery were: John B. Campbell,
Archibald Campbell and Robert Robinson. From the record book, which
dates from 1870, comes the information that the plot holders felt that
they should not be using a burial ground for which they did not have
the title. At a public meeting the original trustees were replaced by
Duncan Graham, a farmer on Lot 5 Con. 3 and G. Hitchcock, a
storekeeper in Komoka. These trustees had no trouble securing title
to the property and a demand deed was prepared. However, John
Campbell died before matters could be finalized and, according to
inheritance laws in force at the time, his property went to his eldest
son, Archiblad, who had not come to Canada with the family. John B.
was instructed to write to his brother regarding the matter. Archibald
readily agreed to give the trustees a deed and offered to pay all
expenses. It would appear that some time elapsed before the matter
was closed, for it was not until 1870 that a bill for $51.12 was sent
to Dunoon, Argyleshire, Scotland. This included an amount for the
survey and for fencing." He was buried after 4 Jan 1837 in Lobo Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada.533 (Campbell Cemetery) Marriages by Dugald Campbell, Minister Baptist Church, Aldborough
