(2a) 1683, 6 Dec: Will proved. He emigrated in Sep 1632 from England.684 William, born in England came
in ship "Lyon", arrived in Boston, Sept.
1632
**********The Lyman Family and 2 Hills brothers, William and Thomas,
sailed on the same ship--the Lion (Lyon) in 1632. The Hills brothers
were attached to household of Apostle John Elliot at the time. Thomas
died later in the house of Rev. Elliot --Nov/Dec 1633. WHen they
landed they joined the church at Cambridge, MA. When the church left
enmass for Ct, the HILLS and LYMAN families went too. The HILLS and
LYMAN families were group that founded E> HARTFORD< CT in 1635/1636.
He came over as an indentured servant to Rev. Eliot in Massachusetts,
but when his indenture was complete, he had a falling out with Rev.
Eliot, and left and went to Connecticut. He had a brother named John
who died young--Sylvia Bales
According to the "Hills Family in America," William and and his
brother Thomas immigrated to New England on the ship "Lyon," arriving
in Boston September, 1632. The ship's master was William Pearce. It
sailed from Bristol 24 June 1632 and entered Boston harbor September,
1632. This date is confirmed in the "History of the First Church in
Roxbury, MA, 1630-19084," by Walter Eliot Thwing. However, "The Great
Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Vol. II," by
Robert Charles Anderson, 1995, indicates that William migrated in 1632
on the ship "William & Francis" and that it's not proven that he
&
Thomas were brothers. (According to another text, the Rev. John Eliot,
Sr arrived on the ship "Lyon" in 1631; perhaps this is where the
confusion arose from.) It is likely that both men became manservants
indentured to clergyman Rev. John Eliot at Roxbury, having come on the
same ship as Ann Mumford, intended wife of the same minister. Both
John Eliot and Ann Mumford/Mountfort were originally from Essex Co. as
well. Eliot was referred to as the "Apostle to the Indians." He died
on 15 Aug 1683 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.672
William Hills is listed as an original proprietor of Hartford and
much is
found on him. He was captain of the first trainband on the east side
of the
river, in 1653; freeman in 1669, and was shot by the Indians and
wounded him
(Mary K. Talcott, THE ORIGINAL PROPRIETORS, Hartford: Soc of the
Descendants
of the Founders of Hartford, 1998 electronic reprint). He had his estate probated
on 6 Dec 1683 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.684
William HILLS and Mary ARNOLD were married in Dec 1648 in Hartford, Hartford
Co., CT.672 Late in the
year
