                                   Herbert Spencer Pollard

Where did this name come from

Herbert Spencer Pollard , born December 11, 1893

Son of Norval Pollard & Anna Dewalt Pollard

So where did his parent get the name Herbert Spencer ? Most likely guess is he was named for ,  the famous British philosopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer 1820-1903. "Mr.Spencer was born in Derby, England on 27 April 1820, the eldest of nine children, but the only one to survive infancy. He was the product of an undisciplined, largely informal education. His father, George, was a school teacher, but an unconventional man, and Spencer's family were Methodist 'Dissenters,' with Quaker sympathies. From an early age, Herbert was strongly influenced by the individualism and the anti-establishment and anti-clerical views of his father, and the Benthamite radical views of his uncle Thomas. Indeed, Spencer's early years showed a good deal of resistance to authority and independence."

So we know who he was , But what impressed our Herbert Spencer's parents so much that they would name a son after him . Was is simply that his philosophy was so popular? It is known that he once visited Pittsburgh . He came at the special invitation of Andrew Carnegie , who it is said also admired the man greatly  ..Was it the constant well chosen quotes found in the press of the day ? Such as "and then, in the second place, Herbert Spencer says that sound thinking cannot be got from ill-fed brains.   or "We believe with Herbert Spencer that "Christianity contains the principles of modern sociology"

I myself in researching this piece find his writhings to have much merit , and believe should I know more find him easy to admire as well .
