Can you help me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brent Pollard 09/Jul/2002:10:57:19 eexhorter@iglide.net Continued from last entry. Sorry about the length. 2003, my child will be of the 13th generation born in America. My father's name is Gary Neal Pollard. His father was Grady Newman Pollard. His father was John Benjamin Pollard. (Actually he had more middle names because his parents couldn't decide which family name to go with.) His father, I believe, was Ede Pollard. His father was Steven (Stephen) Pollard. I am sure I am missing one because there were two Stevens (Stephens). Their names were spelled differently from one another, though. Steven (Stephen) was in a Georgia Calvary Regiment in the Civil War. (I bring this up only because a Civil War era newspaper wrote a story about how his horse could "smell yankees." LOL) I know this may seem like a lot of useless info. If so, I apologize. I just hope that perhaps this "jars" the memory of those who may have descended from West GA. If so, get in touch with me. I appreciate your site ------------------- ------------------------------------------- Brent Pollard 09/Jul/2002:10:50:19 eexhorter@iglide.net I am a Pollard descended from Pollards that settled in West Georgia. (Around Haralson County, GA.) The Net seems awfully quiet about GA Pollards. (Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.) I remember that my great grandfather wrote a book about our history. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a copy. I was a child when I read it so my memory is not too complete on the subject. If some of my West Georgia cousins should stumble across this site, please let me know how I can get a copy of that book again. For those of you that may be interested in what I remember, I will relate what I can still recall from childhood. Our particular branch was traced back to Worcestershire and Devonshire, England. They originally settled in New England. Of these, my branch eventually moved into the Yorktown, VA area, the Carolinas, and finally West GA. (They were in GA by the early 1800s.) I still remember the fact that I am of the 12th generation of Pollards to be born in America. My paternal grandfather was the right Reverend Benjamin Pollard, Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man ( the Anglican Diocese of the Isle of Man, UK ). The Bishop commissioned research into the family history in the 1930s and traced us directly back to Sir Thomas Pollard of Newton Tracey near Bideford in Devon England in the 11th Century. The church at Newton Tracey has many Pollard graves and inscriptions. The family lived in Devon for several centuries and were of some significance and with considerable land. One descendant was an original Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. (see also Burkes Landed Gentry and Burke's Extinct Peerages). Family seat was Horwood House, Newton Tracey. The Pollards, O'Neills', and Cox family is also in my line of ancestors. My Grandfather, Joachim Murat Hammitt, was the son of Isaac Hammitt. His son, my father was also named Isaac (Edwin) Hammitt. Grandfather stayed with the steamboats until his death. In his later years, he brokered barges for the Pittsburgh Pool and other areas. My father helped out at the boat yards in his youth, but after his service in France in WW I, he married my mother, Ruth Eva Fennell, and went to work for Gulf Oil Corp. in Pittsburgh. Grandfather wanted me to go into the river work, which i would have liked to do, but, having lost my left foot from wartime injuries, I couldn't see any future in walking on barges and boats, with the great possibility of falling into the water, so I became an auto mechanic, and that ended our family's association with the river boats. /Your web site is very interesting, and filled in Mara Harris 05/May/2002:13:20:30 mBruce9681@aol.com I am a Pollard descendant, my earliest Pollards were in PA and later in Michigan. David URQUHART was born 1814, orphaned about 1818 and was taken in by one sheriff Savo(y)ie in Chatham NB Canada. When he got married to Eliz. Curtis Pollard 09/Sep/2001:07:05:49 Hi , I don't believe that I connect to any of your Pollard's. My family camefrom Virginia to Georgia about 1778, or just after the Revoluntary War.They were just settling Georgia and there is evidence that a great number of families moved to Georgia from Virginia at that time. My ancestor is William Pollard and there were William II and William III. But there were other William Pollard's so it is confusing. I have not documented the county in Virginia that we came from. / Thanks , Curtis Mary Jane Stokes 09/Sep/2001:06:07:50 My great-great-great grandmother was Mary Anderston Pollard (Darracott), the daughter of William Pollard, II, of Hanover County, Virginia. She was born in 1787 and her father was born in 1760 in Hanover County at the home of his father William Pollard, I. Both Williams Pollards were Clerks of the Hanover County for many years. Their father, Joseph Pollard who was born in King and Queen County,Virginia in 1701, was Clerk and Treasurer of that county. In 1754, he moved to Goochland County, Virginia where he became Sheriff, Justice, and a member of the vestry of Beaverdam Church. His wife was Priscilla Hoomes who was born at the "Old Mansion" in Caroline County, Virginia and whose grandfather and nephew brought the first thoroughbred horses into America and had the first race track for horses. At a later time, I can post sources for all of my information. My family is related through Randolph Pangburn and several other names that you mentioned. It is so strange to see an old entry for Nancy Pangburn (my maiden name) Thank you so much for the site... I know that it will help me and I go through trying to find more about my ancestors. / Nancy lyn pollard 31/Aug/2001:11:10:29 I have traced our Pollard's to be from Cornwall, UK; from a small village near Liskeard. Earliest confirmed ancestor is Thomas Pollard, born 1818, St Ive, Cornwall. His parents and siblings are listed in the 1841 census however I have yet to organize that data. Our Thomas homesteaded in the Canadian West and a son, Frederick, born 1886, remained in the area. I see your data is US based - there was a family story that one of Frederick's brothers headed to the USA - this I have yet to confirm.
