James Pollard

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1741 POLLARD , JAMES

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 POLLARD was born Abt. 1741 in Virginia, and died August 17, 1793 in Laurens County, South Carolina. He married ELIZABETH.

Notes for JAMES POLLARD:

[Pollard.ftw]

According to tradition, James' family was massacred by indians when he was a boy. Since James was too young to be any threat to them, instead of killing him, the indians tied him to a horse and set it loose in the woods. James was raised by a Samuel Ball. It is possible that James married Samuel's daughter Ann Ball. If this is true, then Elizabeth would have been his second wife. According to the death notice for Margaret Pollard Watts dated July 7, 1854, Capt. James Pollard moved to South Carolina from Culpeper County, Va., and settled on Saluda River, Laurens District, in 1772.

Notes for WILLIAM POLLARD:

[Pollard.ftw]

Possibly moved with his father and at least one sister to South Carolina from Culpeper County, Virginia before the Revolutionary War. He fought in the Revolutionary War and was wounded in the left breast at the Battle of Ninety-Six Fort in South Carolina. Married Elizabeth White after the war and had numerous children. Franklin was the next to youngest of the children. Elizabeth apparently remarried after William's death. [Elizabeth White Pollard Goodman]. She applied for Revolutionary War Widow Pension.

The Pollards were originally in England. They came to Jamestown, Virginia with the first settlers in 1607 or, as followers of the Oliver Cromwell movement (1650-1660), they fled first to Ireland and then to Jamestown in the latter part of the 17th century. 1607 fits Jim Pollard's story that, "his ancestors were here to greet the pilgrims when they arrived in 1620."

by: Dean R. Pollard

In notes taken by Dean Pollard from conversations with his father, Jim Pollard, it is mentioned that during the Revolutionary War, the British "tied William Pollard to a horse." This however, is most likely a mistake since William's father James was tied to a horse by indians.

1834 POLLARD , JOSEPH [s] History Of Greater Ashland , Maine Area , by Lynn Winslow York ./ " Contributed by Bonnie Jackson , Thanks Bonnie " " Joseph Pollard arrived in 1837 from Old Town Believing the area the area would soon be settled , he decided to build a mill and left for Old Town to bring back the supplies to open the mill . Pollard left Old Town late in the Winter of 1838 with five tons of equipment loaded on sleds . When the group of men had gone as far as they could with teams , the horses were sent back , he and a group of eight men remained to bring the mill equipment to Masardis . They constructed a large sled with wide runners and set to work hauling it themselves . They hauled the loaded sled from early morning until late night , when they would stop and unload , returning the next morning and loading the sled with the next load . They continued in this manner , until they were four miles from Masardis , it was now late March . They arrived at a maple tree grove and made 300 lbs. of sugar before proceeding on to Masardis .

After setting up his mill and clearing a farm , Mr. Pollard moved his family to Masardis in October , 1840 . Mrs. Pollard and her five children ages seven through eleven walked the last fourteen miles of the trip to Masardis .  ...

Mr. Pollard continued to run his mill for five years before selling out . The mill changed hands several times before it burned about 1855 . Until 1843 Mr. Pollard had lived in a log house he bought from Leonard Reed Who left to keep a hotel in Presque Isle. In that year he built a framed house were he lived until it burned in 1884 , nearly killing Mrs. Pollard who lay in bed with a broken leg .  Mr. Pollard died in February of 1888 . "
