Harold A. (Red) REDA--Master Sergeant, Retired--Passed away Thursday, June 15, 2000. He was 68. He is survived by one daughter, Ronda McClurg of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Beatrice Coats and her husband Don Coats of Casa Grande, AZ; sister, Marie Lewis and her husband Gordon Lewis of Mason; brother, A.G. (Bud) Reda and his wife Mary of Jacksonville, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He served in the United States Marine Corps for over 23 years with two combat tours in Vietnam. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Winell of St. Simons, GA; brothers, Fred J. Reda of Frankenmuth, Franklin W. Reda of Clio and James A. Reda of Clio. Memorial services are pending.

Eldine E. REITHEL--Unionville--Passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2001. She was 82. She was born in Unionville on Oct. 24, 1918, the daughter of Jacob and Florence (Schmidt) Roller. On March 28, 1941 she married Merill G. Reithel. He preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2000. Eldine was a lifelong member of Unionville Moravian Church and its Ladies Aid. For many years, she had been a member of the Moravian Ladies Quilters. Among her hobbies were designing quilts and crocheting. Eldine is survived by a son, David (Kathleen) Reithel of Unionville; a daughter, Diane (Edward) Schulz of Acton, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Steven (Cindy) Schulz of Pa., Brent Schulz of New York, Kevin (Amy) Reithel and Kent Reithel, both living in Unionville and Scott Reithel of Royal Oak; four great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Meghan Reithel, and Joshua, Rachel and David Schulz; a brother, Ernest Roller of Florida; and a sister, Carol (Roy) Schulz of Unionville. Eldine was preceded in death by brothers Ralph, Clayton and Arthur; and a sister, Nelda Irrer. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at Unionville Moravian Church with Rev. Glenn Heintzelman officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Unionville Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Donald E. RICHARDS--Fairgrove--Died Thursday, May 25, 2000 at Bay Medical Center. He was 76. Donald was born April 5, 1924 in Merritt Township, the son of Julius and Mary (Schillair) Richards. He and Evelyn Spencer were united in marriage September 19, 1944. She preceded him in death May 19, 1995. Donald liked going to rummage sales and was a collector of interesting items, especially teapots. Surviving are four sisters, Sylvia and husband Everett Osantowski and Eleanor Eigner, all of Fairgrove, and Marie Chamberlain of Bay City; six brothers, Harvey and wife Hazel Richards of Mikado, Edward Richards of Freeland, Roy Richards of Vassar, Delbert and wife Joann Richards of Fairgrove, Virgil and wife Clarice Richards of Bay City, Julius Jr. and wife Beverly Richards of Vassar; adopted son, Richard; many nieces and nephews; special friend Mary Gwisdala of Bay City. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Evelyn; two infant daughters; brother, Ervin, and baby brother Lawrence. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Fairgrove with Rev. Walter David officiating. Burial is in Gilford Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home 2-9 p.m. Sunday and 9-11 a.m. on Monday. Memorials may be made to Family Wishes. Helen Priscilla ROCK--Caro--Died Wednesday, June 21, 2000 in Kalkaska. She was born January 8, 1931 in Hammond, Louisiana to Stephen and Rose Mary (Petho) Kish. She married Wilford Rock on August 9, 1952 in Caro. She lived in Caro all her life and retired as a registered nurse from Delphi. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Roselyn (Richard) Snyder of Caro; one son, Arnold Rock of Caro; two sisters, Mary Connel of Vassar and Julia (William) Dillon of Caro; two brothers, Steven Kish of North Carolina and Albert (Betsy) Kish of Bad Axe; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank Kish of Caro. No services were planned at this time. Arrangements were by Sorenson Funeral Home, Inc. of Grayling.

Rudolph (Rudy) RODAMMER--Glenwood Springs, Colo.--Died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at Glen Valley Care Center. He was born in Vassar July 15, 1916, the son of Herman and Mary (Hecht) Rodammer. He moved to Denver, Colo. in 1941. He was married to Beulah (Bea) Mott July 3, 1967. She survives him. Rudy was a retired iron worker and most recently was a gatekeeper at the South Canyon Landfill. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, crossword puzzles, maps and conversation. Survivors include a sister, Arlene (Henry) Hohman of Vassar; nieces, Katherine (Aaron) Korthals of Vassar, Patricia Myers of Austin, Texas, Mary Hohman of Orlando, Florida, Nancy (Ken) Hill of Alma; nephew, Donald Hayden of Colorado; many cousins and friends. He thought a lot of all his surviving family members and friends. Rudy requested to be cremated.

Anna Marie ROGERS, 38, of Olive Hill, Ky, formerly of Pigeon, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, 2000, at the St. Claire Medical Center, Moorehead, Ky. She was born Feb. 2, 1962, in Pigeon to Joan G. (McArdle) Blome and the late Donald Blome. Anna was a 1980 graduate of Laker High School and moved to Williamston near Lansing a short time later. In 1996, she moved to Moorehead, Ky., with her family and took a position at St. Claire Medical Center where she was a surgical assistant. She was a member of the Olive Hill Church of the Nazarene and a marvelous artist and poet. Surviving are her husband, Gary; two daughters, Sarah and Amanda, at home; her mother, Joan Blome of Pigeon; her brother, Tim Blome and his wife, Raynette, of Pigeon; and three sisters, Arlene Jamison and her husband, Ron, of Cass City, Majorie Justin and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe, and Donna Deering of Pigeon. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Burial will be near her father in Grandlawn Cemetery, Pigeon. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family.

Sister Mary Walter Romain entered the Dominican Order of Sisters in 1933 and taught school in Chicago, Lansing, Detroit and the Soo. She is survived by one sister, Ellen Romain of Caro. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dominican Chapel with burial in the Dominican Cemetery in Adrian. Iola ROSS--Caro--Died Saturday, July 22, 2000 in her home. She was 80. She was born January 19, 1920 in Caro to Russell and Gertie (Avery) Curry. She married Richard L. Ross July 26, 1941 in Akron. He died April 25, 1995. Iola attended County Normal and taught school for several years before having children. She was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church, Naomi Circle, Domino Club, and Knitting Club. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and gardening. Iola is survived by her children, Jane Ross and husband, John Christiano of Essex Junction, Vt., Judy Ross (Arnold Leesy) of Lexington, Richard Ross of Caro; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; stepsister, Opal Hunter of Mayville; sister-in-law, Emma Ross; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Curry and Ethel Seddon; brother, John Curry. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Kingston United Methodist Church with Rev. Milford J. RYAN Sr.--St. Helen, formerly Akron--Died Friday, April 13, 2001 in his St. Helen home after a battle with lung cancer. He was 66. Mr. Ryan was born January 23, 1935, in West Branch, the son of Fred and Elizabeth (Osborne) Ryan. He married the former Shirley Beach July 3, 1954 in Akron. They made their home there for 44 years. He was a linesman at Saginaw Steering Gear for 34 years. Formerly of Akron, he had lived in St. Helen since 1998. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughters, Connie Bowen of Port Richie, Fla., Cindy (Steve) Irvine of Cass City, and Peggy Ryan of West Branch; sons, Don (Audrey) Ryan of Tustin, Micheal of Morristown and Milford II of Morristown; brother, William of Wichita, Texas; sister, Alverna Hessler of Akron; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Robbi L. SALGAT--Caro, formerly of Fairgrove--Passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Cartwright Center in Saginaw. He was 50. He was born on December 1, 1950, in Saginaw, and lived in the Caro and Fairgrove areas all of his life. He was a graduate of Akron-Fairgrove High School. Robbi was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam, and was a member of the Fairgrove V.F.W. Post #7486. He retired from General Motors after 30 years of employment. He is survived by one daughter, Danielle Salgat of Novi; his father, Leland "Bud" Salgat of Caro; two sisters, three brothers and spouses, Sondra and Thomas Hadaway of Fairgrove, Yvette and Keith Kasserman of Pigeon, Jan and Sandy Salgat of Caro, Todd Salgat of Caro, Kurt Salgat and friend, Cindy Gaul of Bay City; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen, in 1996; and a brother, Howard in 1984. Funeral was held at Collon Funeral Home of Caro on Wednesday, April 25 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ronald Wigand of First Baptist Church of Caro officiating. She was born on May 25, 1931 in Sunfield, MI., the daughter of Donald and Iva Lundquist Park. On December 22, 1951 she married Vincent Sattelberg in Marshall, MI. Joanne was a former member of Scottsdale Presbyterian Church of Scottsdale, Arizona and its choir, a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Unionville and a former choir director, she had been Elmwood Township Clerk for 13 years, and performed volunteer services at Hills and Dales Hospital, Cass City.Surviving are her husband, Vincent; her mother, Iva Park; their children, Margie (Steven) White-Cormier of Caro, James (DeAnn) Sattelberg of Unionville, and Richard (Joan) Sattelberg of Gagetown; grandchildren, Angela White, Philip White, Sarah (Bill) Mokma, Benjamin Sattelberg, Matthew Sattelberg, Nicholas Sattelberg, Jenna Sattelberg, Erica Cormier and Meghan Cormier; one great-grandchild; a brother, Robert (June) Park of Mesa, Arizona; and a sister, Kathryn Vincent living in Battle Creek. Christian SCHARICH--Unionville--Passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at Bay Medical Center. He was 89. He was born February 3, 1912 in Tuscola County, the son of Casper and Regina (Weigan) Scharich. On March 28, 1936 he married Frieda Fischer and she survives him. Christian was retired from Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Besides his wife, Christian is survived by son, Luke of Clinton Township; a daughter, Gloria (Larry) Vandermark of Akron; a granddaughter, Sha Borkowski of California. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Casper, David and Charles; a sister, Amelia Reppuhn and a sister-in-law, Amelia Scharich. Funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 16, from St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Reverend Michael Allen officiating. Burial was in Demorest Cemetery in Akron Township. Merle SCHOTT-Vassar--Passed away Saturday, September 23, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. Merle was born in Detroit on July 10, 1914 and was the daughter of Ernest and Marvel Engle. On July 10, 1936 Merle married Arthur Schott. Together they shared 64 years of marriage. Merle had been a Vassar resident for the past 55 years and a member of Vassar First Baptist Church. Merle leaves to cherish her memories her husband and their family, Art Schott of Vassar; son, Robert Schott of Caro; two grandaughters, Jamie and Susan; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Mussnig of Mayville and June Griffon of Caro; as well as her extended family. As Merle had requested and her family honored her wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place at Merle's request. Memorials may be made to the Vassar First Baptist Church. Hanlin Chapel for Funerals of Vassar assisted the family in the arrangements.

Our daughter, Penny Ann Schmitt, was born January 29, 2000 in Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe and died Thursday, June 1 in Hurley Hospital, Flint. Penny will also be missed by her brothers and sisters, Justan O'Kelly, Allan O'Kelly, Abigail O'Kelly, Roy Allen Fritz O'Kelly; grandparents, Roy Allen and Penny Fritz, Sr. of Caro, Lorraine Hampel of Caro and David Hampel of Caro. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joshua Edwin Roy Fritz Schmitt. Penny's funeral service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 2 at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Rev. Marcia Ann Yeager was born October 8, 1938 in Bay City, the daughter of Clifford and Marion (Robinson) Yeager. She was married to Eugene Schnell on June 3, 1961. Marcia had been employed at the Bavarian Inn of Frankenmuth. She was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Richville. Marcia enjoyed camping, ceramics, woodcarving, painting, gardening and her grandchildren. Surviving besides her husband, are two sons and their wives, Michael and Carol Schnell of Vassar, Clifford and Kris (Beyerlein) Schnell of Vassar; four grandchildren, Chad and Jason Schnell, Zachary and Stephanie Weiss; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Fritz Sommer of Munger; a stepbrother, Jim Carr of Suttons Bay; stepmother and stepfather, Emmet and Dorothy Bates of Houghton Lake; mother-in-law, Edna Schnell of Vassar; brother-in-law, Ronald Schnell of Vassar. She was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Marion Yeager; and a sister-in-law, Sally Schnell. He married Nora Warby September 25, 1982 at Richfield Church of Nazarene in Otisville. Terry worked on Wilder Slosser Farm in Henpeck for 20 years. He worked in model shop at A.C. for 27 years, retiring in 1984. Rodney R. SHANNON--Fairgrove--Died Saturday morning, May 26, 2001 at Covenant Cooper. He was 97. He was born March 17, 1904 in Fairgrove, the son of Douglas and Eleanor (Crowley) Shannon. He married Elsie E. LeValley March 24, 1929. Rodney was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro and had been employed by Buick Motor Co. and Defoe Shipbuilding, but most of his working life was devoted to working the family farm. In 1960 he built the first all-electric house in Tuscola County. His hobbies included hunting and beekeeping. For the past 29 years he and Elsie spent the winter months in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Fairgrove; six children, Donna and husband Wendell Pafford of Essexville, Douglas Shannon of Fairgrove, Mert Periard of Florida, Mary Ann Shannon of Bay City, Marie and husband Keith I. Shannon of Gagetown, Sherry and husband Paul T. Vaughn of Mayville; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. John H. SHOCKEY--North Branch--John H. Shockey, 70, of North Branch, died Friday (June 2, 2000) at Lapeer Regional Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1929 in LaVale, Md., to John and Marion (Shank) Shockey. He married Judy Caldwell at North Branch St. James Lutheran Church on Nov. 7, 1970. He graduated in 1948 from Butler High, Pa., then shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was discharged in 1952. After serving his country, he entered Thiel College, Greenville, Pa., and graduated in 1956. He worked at Lapeer Vesley with 15 years of service and Vlasic Foods with 10 years of service as an electrician. After retirement, he worked at Lapeer County Vocational Technical Center for 5 years as a paraprofessional. He was a member of the North Branch American Legion Post 457, a member of the Destroyer Escort Association, National and Michigan Chapters, and the North Branch St. James Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Janay (John) Knop of Lapeer; son, James (friend, Kelly) of North Branch; mother-in-law, Ethel Caldwell of North Branch; sister, Maryann (Ken) Welch of St. Johns; brothers, Donald (Dorothy) of Arkansas and George (Brenda) of Pennsylvania; aunt, Virginia Shank of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and father-in-law, Glenn Caldwell. Irma L. SKINNER--Caro--Passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2001 at Caro Community Hospital. She was 84. She was born on January 26, 1917, at Ellington, and was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County. The former Irma Allard graduated from Caro High School and married Kenneth Skinner on Nov. 1, 1936, in Saginaw. She and her husband were self-employed farmers. Irma had worked as a nurse's aide at the Caro State Home, Sacrider Nursing Home and the Van Winkle Home. Throughout her life she looked after her men; her father-in-law, her husband and four sons. She enjoyed reading the Bible and nursing information. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Skinner; four sons, David and Connie Skinner of Durand, Albert and Ruthann Skinner of Owosso, Robert and Beth Skinner of Caro, Paul Skinner of Caro; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Phyllis Allard of Florida; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Allard and Marion Johnson. Funeral service will be held at Collon Funeral Home of Caro on Monday, May 14 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Phil Rice of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Ellington Township Cemetery. She married Rex Stephens in Canada on July 25, 1928. She and her husband opened Brien and Stephens Shoe Store in 1934. It then became Stephens and Weston Shoe Store in 1960. She retired in 1965. She loved to bowl, play bridge and work on puzzle books. She was born Sept. 16, 1935 in West Branch, the daughter of the late William T. and June (Fultz) McKenney. She was united in marriage to Raymond P. Sting on June 1, 1963 in West Branch. Carol had been involved with the volunteer assault crisis program in Caro; the Lutheran Child and Family Service; had taught Sunday School for 25 years; was on the stewardship board of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe; was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bach; and was very active in the Thursday morning Bible study. She also enjoyed sewing. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. Surviving are her husband, Raymond; two daughters, one son and spouses, Joann Sting of Charleston, SC, Annette and David J. Donald STRATTON--Millington--Died Saturday, June 9, 2001 at his home. He was 77. Don was born in Fostoria, June 2, 1924 and was the son of Floyd D. and Gladys (Beech) Stratton. He was a resident of Fostoria and Millington all of his life. Mr. Stratton married Alzina Lake Dec. 8, 1951 in Fostoria and together they celebrated 49 years of marriage. He retired in 1980 after 32 years with General Motors, Fisher Body on Coldwater Rd. in Flint and was a member of UAW #326. Mr. Stratton was a veteran of WWll serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Millington and the American Legion in Millington, Post #164. He was a past member of the Otter Lake Lions and a member of the Legion Color Guard. Elda Maria Caterina Tremonti STREETER--Vassar--Passed away from this life on Thursday, June 7, 2001. She was born March 9, 1910 in Lorenzago. Italy. Elda was born in the beautiful Alps in a village called Lorenzago di Cadore and emigrated to the United States with her mother and sister at the end of World War l, coming to Vassar where she spent the next 81 years. For a brief time her and her husband, Norman Streeter, lived in Mikado, Mich., where she enjoyed life in Northern Michigan forest countryside, returning to Vassar to spend the rest of their lives. She and Norman were married on March 23, 1929. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1988, having spent most of his life as an employee of the City of Vassar. Elda is survived by her oldest daughter, Norma Service and her husband, Buck; her son, Larry Streeter and his wife, Maryeln, all of Vassar. Her daughter Lanora Pierce preceded her in death in February of 1997. She also leaves behind to mourn, her 10 grandchildren, Christine Trea, Kim Gordines, Gail Damm, Jackie Atkerson, Leslie Betts, Kelly Atkins, Bruce Pierce, Mary Pierce, Amy Sayles, and Tracy Streeter; 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her only sibling, Rose DeLorenzo preceded her in death in April 1995. She leaves behind a loving niece, Louise Harrison and her family, and Robert DeLorenzo and his family, and her brother-in-law, Duane Streeter and his wife and family. Several cousins also survive and countless friends who knew and loved her and her contagious smile. During her life she spent many years working for various Vassar businesses including Miller Grain Company and the Columbia Hotel but her favorite job was working for Bill Buchman at the Vassar Bakery where she enjoyed the old Italian custom of making homemade bread and greeting the public, and visiting with her many friends. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9 at the Hanlin Chapel for Funerals in Vassar with Rev. John Becker conducting the service. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove.

Bernard L. SWICK--Caro--Passed away on Friday, August 25, 2000 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. He was 87. He was born on August 5, 1913, at Peck, the oldest of 10 children born to Alonzo and Dorothy (Mellendorf) Swick. Bernard was a resident of Caro most of his life and was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys (Drew) in 1976 after 40 years of marriage. Mr. Swick began his employment as a grocery boy at age 12, and worked for over 50 years as a farmer, milk hauler, foundry worker, school bus driver and businessman. He, along with his wife Gladys, owned and operated Bernie's Trailer Sales in Caro for 30 years. After retirement, he resided with his devoted companion, Betty. They spent winters together in Palmetto, Florida, until his health began to fail. Mr. Swick appreciated the Lutheran Home Health Care providers who made it possible for him to live out his life in his own home. For many years he enjoyed shuffleboard, pool and talking on his CB radio. He is mourned by his son and his wife, Bob and Charlotte Swick of Caro; two daughters, Jeanne and Melvin Hergenreder of Penwater and Elaine and John Stanfield of Williamston; devoted companion, Betty Schweitzer of Caro; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren spread across the United States and England; two sisters and spouses, Arlene Paul of Rochester and Neva and Milton Albrecht of Owendale; one brother and spouse, Pete and Sue Swick of Nashville, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six of his siblings. Funeral service will be held at Collon Funeral Home of Caro on Monday, August 28 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ronald Wigand of First Baptist Church of Caro officiating. Burial will be in Almer Township Cemetery.
