On 2/26/01, David had an MRI before starting his radiation treatments. This MRI showed a second lesion on the right side of the brain. It is smaller than the first, but deeper. It would not be impossible to retrieve with surgery, but there would be a lot more risk involved due to the location. There is a procedure involving a 'gamma knife', that may be used to treat this second tumor. Read more about the machine and the procedure at
gammaknife.com.
If the gamma knife is actually used on David, the order will now be gamma knife first, and then radiation
and chemo. (Since this second tumor has appeared, chemo will be done.)
On 1/26/01, David was discovered to have a brain tumor that was later determined to be directly related to a malignant melanoma that was removed from his shoulder in May of '96. This brain tumor was small and at the surface, but had caused a lot of swelling which had caused a seizure. This seizure was the first David had had, and turned out to be a life saver. The surgeon was able to go in and remove all the tumor, and all of David's post-op scans have come back clear. There will be radiation treatments to follow, but no chemo, since David is showing as disease-free at this point.
