Jack Shrum, provider of the photo, has recently informed us as to why John Shrum's portrait was in this photo without him. It seems John was away in Pittsburgh at the time. Catharine wanted him in the photo so the portrait was substituted in his place. If you look closely you can see it is the very same likeness you see at the top of this page.

John Shrum was born April 20, 1834 in Adamsburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania to Solomon Shrum & Sarah (nee Uber). He became a farmer, living in the same general area of Westmoreland County as his father before him.
On April 20, 1865, in Greensburg, he married Catharine Anna Kepple. She was the daughter of Andrew Joseph Kepple & Susanna and was born March 12, 1845 in Penn Township.
Catherine died on October 6, 1907 at Manor in westmoreland County. John died on March 1, 1913 also at Manor. They are both buried in Brush Creek Cemetery in (or near) Adamsburg.
